Nivedita Menon teaches Political Thought at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. Her previous books include Recovering Subversion: Feminist Politics Beyond the Law, an edited volume Sexualities (2007) and Power and Contestation: India after 1989 (co-authored with Aditya Nigam). An active commentator on the blog kafila.org, she has been active with citizens forums in Delhi around secularism, workers and women s rights, sexuality, and in opposition to the nuclear bomb.

Fantastic overview of Indian feminisms

This book straddles the worlds of academia and popular reading, and is for that very reason such a fantastic read. Menon knows her stuff and although I personally do not like the exclamation marks and little asides in footnotes, these are very minor criticisms of what is otherwise a rarity: a work of scholarly integrity that is nevertheless accessible and refreshingly free of unnecessary jargon. A fabulous addition to the exisiting literarure on feminisms in South Asia.

Good book

This book is really good. It could be great, but I do really like all of the different histologic images. Many different views of different cases. I wish more pathology books were like this as you can read the text of a Barnhill, Levers, or Weedon, but you really have to see a picture of it to help you learn to recognize. I rate this book as good, but it could be great if they listed a few more entities. The basic stuff is covered very well, but at $220+ it might be nice to get some images of the rare things. It appears that all chapters follow a certain format (all appear to be at least 2 pages) so that may be why the editors/authors decided not to cover some rare things, but if they included a few more entities, this book would be fantastic. I also purchased the neoplastic book and it is really really good. Good quality pathology books from this publisher, although the asking price for all of them is quite steep and may price some people (especially residents and younger attendings who could really benefit from books such as this) out of buying it.

This book is a great companion to sign out in my opinion. Especially if a clinician gives you a differential diagnosis, it is very easy to quickly navigate to a diagnosis and quickly see the differential diagnosis as well as really great histologic (and even clinical) images of the disease of interest. I think it would also be a great tool for an in training pathologist or dermatologist to gain a better understanding of exactly what each entity looks like. Many larger books will only have 1-2 if any images of certain entities. This book contains at least three histologic images of every diagnosis. This book also has a number of well-known dermatopathologists on it. It covers the basic entities very well (psoriasiform, interface, and lichenoid dermatoses), but also has some beautiful chapters on rare, infectious entities that I have not seen anywhere else. I would highly recommend this book. It is a little bit on the expensive side ($300), but I definitely believe it is worth the money. I am ordering the neoplastic dermatopathology book as well by Amirsys after viewing the quality of this book.

A good begining

William Reed has tried to define and teach the meaning of KI so that we in the west can learn. The first part of the text helps us undersatnd KI, develop KI and pratcie KI. There are a series of excericses and a section on KI meditation. The second part of the text goes into KI development in the Japanese Arts (Shodo, Aikido, Kiatsu, Go, Noh and the Tea Ceremony). And the third part, Ki in our ever changing world. A must have book.

Like William Reed, I spent over 10 years in the Orient learning martials arts from men who had dedicated their life to the practice. This book ranks among the best written concerning ki. The ideas put forth are universal, and can be assimilated by a broad minded and discerning person. Enjoy this book, I certainly did and continue to do so everytime I pick up my copy.

Mizejewski traces the Ziegfeld Girl’s connections to turn-of-the-century celebrity culture, black Broadway, the fashion industry, and the changing sexual and gender identities evident in mainstream entertainment during the Ziegfeld years. In addition, she emphasizes how crises of immigration and integration made the identity and whiteness of the American Girl an urgent issue on Broadway’s revue stages during that era. Although her focus is on the showgirl as a “type,” the analysis is intermingled with discussions of figures like Anna Held, Fanny Brice, and Bessie McCoy, the Yama Yama girl, as well as Ziegfeld himself. Finally, Mizejewski discusses the classic American films that have most vividly kept this showgirl alive in both popular and camp culture, including The Great Ziegfeld, Ziegfeld Girl, and the Busby Berkeley musicals that cloned Ziegfeld’s showgirls for decades.

Erroneous, Poorly Researched, Boring

I read this about a year ago... well, read most of it, and emailed the author asking for explanations about where she'd come up with certain 'facts' about the Ziegfeld Follies and Ziegfeld Girls. I never heard back. It was apparent to me that many things she wrote were simply lifted from other erroneous Ziegfeld accounts previously published. The author included only what would suit her premise.

The author apparently knows little if anything about Ziegfeld and his "Girls" or his shows. And like the other reviewer said here, this book is beyond boring.

There are many good books out there on Ziegfeld. Don't waste your money or time on this one.

Ziegfeld through the HERstory lens

This incredibly boring and technical book deliberately skips any possible entertainment value (No kidding - she sneers at other Ziegfeld books and movies in her preface) to focus exclusively on feminist revisionism. Instead of telling us anything personal about the showgirls, headliners or Ziegfeld himself, the whole book is viewed through a psychoanalysizing lens that echoes that familiar boogeyman story, "How The Big Bad White Man Hates You". Every musical act is sexually sinister, every costume a deliberate put-down, and only SHE can decode what they all REALLY meant. For example: There is a picture of Anna Held donning a costume where a black mannequin is affixed to her waist, making it appear that her servant is carrying Anna around in a basket on her back. You've probably seen variations of this costume every Halloween but I'll bet you never saw any sexual meaning behind it, did you? Well, the author does. She writes extensively about the significance of the mannequin being attatched to Anna's waist, giving it an imaginary sexual significance that granted Anna the alleged animal-like sexual appetite of the *lower* class black person while keeping her face attractive, clean and white for the paying audience. Oh yeah, OBVIOUSLY. Sort of puts those Gorilla-holding-a-man-in-a-cage costumes you've seen in a different light now, doesn't it? But REALLY now, could she have had the mannequin sprouting from her neck? Or her back? As Freud reportedly once said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." A lot of the book is like this. A LOT OF IT.

The author reads WAY too much into this stuff, and while I'm sure some of it has a basis in fact, the rest is opinion and revisionism on a grand scale. It's the polar opposite of equally annoying books that breathlessly claim Ziegfeld's follies to be the apex of beauty and humanity, and that we've all gone to hell in a handbasket since. The real story lies somewhere in the middle. Remember that if you read this book.

A very well done set of books. I enjoyed how even though it moved to another planet it wasn't so sci-fi that I couldn't follow easily. Very entertaining. My only complaint was the heroine focused a little too much on weakness. Whereas, I prefer it if it is more understated by actions so the reader gets a deeper appreciation of the character's growth.

Fun for a change of pace

I don't usually like this genre; but was fascinated by the idea that a human could really be a dragon and not know it.

Character development could have been much stronger; understanding her backstory would have made her struggle between human and dragon that much more powerful.

I would have also liked to learn more about Endor; both T & C tell her, but we never really hear the stories and I couldn't really get into Trav's character at all.

Ending felt rushed. Once they defeat the Orgs, we're forced to read an epilogue 4 yrs later and I needed to know more details.

It is amazing how much you can love two people (dragons) that are complete opposites! And how if we try and give it our all we can adjust to and find love and happiness in any situation! I thoroughly enjoyed each character and the story they each had lived. I thank you for a great story and a great read!

A remarkable feat of compression

I suppose this book was written for a readership which is pretty well new to the subject, and which is more interested, as I think the author is, in recent than in more distant centuries. As such it is a workmanlike, if uneven, summary of the whole of French history in a mere 300 or so pages - uneven because the first half of the book takes us from the Cro-Magnon cave-dwellers to the 1880s, and the second half from the 1880s right up to the end of 2010. Jenkins gallops through the first 15 centuries in 45 pages; trots at a fair lick through the next 270 years in some 60 pages; then begins to slow down somewhat, until the last four decades are covered remarkably well in some 65 pages - much the best part of the book. He makes room for comments about the most important cultural figures, and these remarks, too, grow from a useful sentence or two in the middle of the book to more extensive passages as we go on. It is all a remarkable feat of compression. The penultimate chapter considers what might be the nature of the "French Exception", and there are a few similar pages at the very end; but, apart from that, there are no new reflections; and anyone who knows anything about any one period of French history is unlikely to learn anything new from the relevant pages - though there are some titbits like the Astérix view of the ancient Gauls; the church in the eleventh century trying to impose "The Truce of God" (that there should be no fighting between a Wednesday evening and a Monday morning); the homosexuality of Louis XIII (which was new to me, at any rate); the British attempt to blow up Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800 as he left the opening night of Haydn's Creation oratorio (ditto).

Perfect short summary

This book offers exactly what I was looking for, a history of France that mentions pre-Revolution events without emphasizing them. In fact, the nearer to the present, the more detail given. It is written with a view of France from several vantage points (not just "academic" history, but art, music, political aspirations of key individuals, architecture, attitude of the people, food/wine, The French Exception, etc.). The author's writing style is also very pleasing to me, but of course that is purely personal and not everyone would (or should) agree.

Get the book! I believe you'll like it.

Recommended Reading for Those Who Plan to Travel to France

I purchased this book to prepare for a month tour of France. It is written from a Brittan's point of view who assumes some level of basic understanding of European history for overall context. The author's vocabulary and sentence structure is is very sophisticated and British. He objectively delves into the complexities of French history sufficiently, without too much detail, to enable the understanding of the key personalities and events that shaped the French nation and culture of today. This book has given me a good non-judgemental understanding of French history and an appreciation of how and why the French culture evolved to what it is today.

Great book for siblings of twins!

As a child psychologist and a parent of 4, I highly recommend the Paris Morris book series. My kids love the bright, charming illustrations and the voice of the child narrator. I am impressed at how complex issues such as sibling rivalry are dealt with in such simple and elegant prose. The travel books are excellent as well. The whole series very effectively presents a "child's-eye"point of view.

The simplest, yet most informative graphology book ever written!

Kathi McKnight was on the Dr. Oz show speaking about graphology, the science of analyzing a person's personality and health issues from their handwriting. I was amazed with her accurate, professional profile on Dr. Oz's handwriting. This intriqued me greatly, so I bought her 66-page spiral-bound book immediately after the show, and I'm glad I did!

I have purchased other graphology books in the past, but they were tedious, long, technical and verbose. In comparison, Kathi's book has large print, double spacing between paragraphs and one underlined handwriting example on each page. Yes, there is ONE bold heading on each page with ONE example! That's it. So simple, yet so instructive. What a fun way to learn graphology. There is even a section designated to practicing the trait under the example. Finally, on the bottom of each page is a quote or word of wisdom to remind us that our inner self reflects outward through our handwriting.

Kathi's "Handwriting Analysis" is a delightful, concise, informative book, related practice lesson plan and self-help manual all in one. It is a quick, easy reference guide each and every time. I am now inspired to begin my own handwriting profile analysis on friends and family. I, for one, hope Kathi McKnight will write her next book soon in the very near future!

It was much "less" than I expected. I was expecting much more information than it gave. It was more like a workbook with skimpy explanations. I was looking for more analysis.

I saw this author on Dr. Oz & thought this book would be interesting, but it's basically an ad for going to the author's website for more information. ugh!
