About the Author
Darlene Ortiz is widely known as the first cover girl of rap. Her poses for such seminal Ice T albums as Rhyme Pays and Power made her a Hip Hop icon. She also starred in multiple music videos and modeled in dozens of magazines. She co-hosts a radio show with comedian Corey Holcomb that boasts thousand of listeners. Ortiz is a fitness instructor, songwriter and can claim acting on her resume, starring in a scene with Denzel Washington in the film Ricochet. Heidi Siegmund Cuda is an Emmy Award winning producer and the author of The Ice Opinion with Ice T, the first book of rap. She also wrote Got Your Back with Tupac’s bodyguard Frank Alexander; Sublime’s Brad Nowell: Crazy Fool (Portrait of a Punk); and Warped Book: Tales of Freedom and Psychotic Ambition, about the Vans Warped Tour. Cuda is a former investigative producer for Fox 11 News and former music critic and columnist for the Los Angeles Times. She now writes screenplays.

Book was ok. It doesn't really tell many compelling stories and Ms. Ortiz does not seem to want to reveal a lot of specific details. Overall, I wouldn't recommend unless you were really a fan of Ms. Ortiz.

I really liked the book because it wasn't about her trying to get revenge. She had Tracy's back even after he left her and his son. She's really the definition of down because any other women would of sued his ass for child support. 5150 NATION holla

Darlene's Kindness and Elegance

What i liked the most about the book is the Kindness and Class of Darlene. She had some hard time, yet through all her ordeal she maintained a noble attitude, never felt any resentment or bitterness against the man who basically turned his back on her and for no reasons. A Star like 'Ice T" most other women would sue him or take him to the cleaner. Darlene is elegance and class
The book was very well written. It was easy to read, understand, and felt like a conversation between 2 friends. The kindness that reflected did touch my heart. The book size and soft cover was light and easy to carry. I liked very much the large print; i could read without my glasses.

Rose, Darlene's Mom, what a character!

Heidi Cuda integrated all the characters in a smooth and kept the reader engaged at all times.

It was fascinating reading the story of a Star and how he got there.

Fascinating book to read.

A partial history of the Screaming Eagles

This history came from many interviews, diary entries, letters, and the like. The authors compiled the information to make it as readable as possible. Included with the history are photos and correspondence (like the memorable "NUTS" note during Bastogne). The goal is to provide a history of the 101st Airborne Division.

The book is very WWII heavy. More than half of the book deals with that. From its conception to its initial deactivation, the reader can walk through the different actions to get an idea of what the soldiers were going through. Some battles are very detailed and put the reader in the action. Others, like the respite between battles, are not covered in as much detail, but there is enough there to understand what the soldier did with his time.

After the reactivation, the books is very quick. There are some photographs, but nothing that really seems new. The narrative seems to have stopped in the 60s even though the division is still around. If I had to find a flaw, that would be it. One of the authors notes working on this manuscript in 1946, so it is very possible that he is not writing anymore. Ideally, another writer should write the history from the reactivation to now.

As a narrative, the book shows what is happening quite well; however, this is military history. There is a host of names and numbers that keep the casual reader from really following the book. The narrative is geared towards military buffs.

For those military buffs, I would recommend this book to get an inside view of this division's work during WWII. Not only does the book provide information on Bastogne, but also Normandy and the other campaigns.

Rendezvous With Destiny is to the 101st Airborne Division as All American - All The Way (Phil Nordyke) is to the 82nd Airborne Division. Both books are the complete and ultimate source of information for their respective divisions.

Rendezvous With Destiny represents an important contribution to the collection of historical information, data and recollections of individuals who fought with the 101st. Because of the nature of airborne operations as well as the high casualty rates, reconstructing battles after the fact is extremely difficult and demanding. In many cases, it's impossible. That's why this work is of such historical significance. It does not read like an Ian Fleming novel but its also not Shakespeare. Its not a dry reference book either. It's a very readable and highly detailed account of some of the bravest fighting men who ever donned an American soldier's uniform!

Included in the 800 pages are numerous photographs, over one hundred maps, a glossary of terms and abbreviations, an honor roll, a list of foreign citations, decorations and battle honors, a collection of airborne songs and poems and authorized strength and casualty lists.

Rendezvous With Destiny was an indispensable reference source in the research for my own historical novel of World War II airborne operations in Europe.

Rendezvous With Destiny

Leonard Rappaport and Arthur Norwood served in the 101st Airborne during World War II. Somehow it came to them to write down the history of that division during the time that they served in it, from 1942 to 1945. They did this to preserve the memory of those who served and came home, and for those who would never come home again. They made sure that the people involved get the credit that they deserved, unstinting in their praise where warranted, yet unafraid of discussing the less than successful moments (thankfully few).

Years later, with less personal involvement, they added a section on the 101st in Vietnam. While not as all encompassing as the WWII section, it is still enlightening as well as entertaining. For a couple of gentlemen who were not professional writers, I find their style to be interesting and informative.

My interest is primarily in the WWII aspect of the book, though I found the Vietnam section to also be telling. If I could give half stars, this would be four and one half stars. Recommended.

In this vivid work, which shares its title with a 2002 documentary Vega produced, two tales flawlessly merge: one recalls an Afro–Puerto Rican girl's upbringing in 1950s Spanish Harlem; the other explains the background for the author's eventual status as a priestess of the Santeria/Lucumi religion. What could have been a familiar coming-of-age story is made fresh with Vega's painterly detail and use of background music (Celia Cruz, Machito and Tito Puente's sounds are present throughout). The sorrows of early school ("the classroom was a joyless cell") give way to double-dutch jumping, puberty, Vega's first crush and her emerging interest in preserving her family's traditions. "Music," her grandmother Abuela, an espiritista (a sort of spiritual psychic), tells her, "is the food of the soul, and the right music calls the spirits." At Abuela's apartment, Vega learns of the orishas (gods and goddesses) and observes Abuela's bóveda (altar); together, they visit the botánica for healing oils. Lovelorn at 14, Vega confides in Abuela, who summons a spirit named Juango to command her body. "Trying to understand Juango was difficult enough, but talking about sex with a spirit possessing my grandmother's body was startling." And thus the author's future path begins. The spiritual and musical journey Vega takes readers on is informative and inspiring, even for the uninitiated.

Adult/High School–"Cotito" was the favorite of her grandmother, a high priestess of the Yoruba religion, whom she helped tend her altar. She accompanied Abuela to the botanica in East Harlem and witnessed the occasional possession by spirits. As she grew older, Vega found that these traditions could suffocate as well as nurture. Her parents' acceptance of machismo led to a double standard in the treatment of brother Chachito and his sisters. Mami, a trained nurse, was not to work outside the home because such women "get ideas" and cheat on their husbands. When she disobeyed, Papi's anger and violence were said to be the result of his love. Cotito silently decided that she didn't want such a love, just as she refused to lie to cover for her brother's philandering. Racism was found in the outside world (school, police) and at home: the children were expected to marry lighter-skinned Latinos, and Chachito jokingly called Cotito a "real African." Smart and perceptive, she became a strong young woman, and worked steadily toward her goal of becoming a teacher. At the mostly white arts high school, she and an African-American friend demanded that music from their cultures be included in music appreciation class. While rejecting the negative, she embraced the many positive aspects of her heritage and the love of her family. Cotito is as frank about her own shortcomings as she is about those of others. Although despising the machismo that keeps her mother prim and servile, forces girls to contain their sexuality, and ultimately condemns her sister to a loveless marriage, Vega is energized by the tropical rhythms heating up Harlem's legendary dance halls and comforted by her grandmother's mystical connection to Afro-Caribbean spirits. Coming-of-age stories chronicling the struggles of first-generation Latinas are not in short supply, and some clunky phrasings ("Memories are the musical notes that form the composition of our souls") suggest that Vega's training in writing has been secondary to her work as a scholar and priestess of Santeria. Still, readers who enjoyed Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street (1984) and Esmerelda Santiago's When I Was Puerto Rican (1993) will find the experiences limned here affecting; her recollections will also be of interest to researchers in gender and Latin American and Caribbean studies. Marta Moreno Vega Breaks It Down!!!

"When the Spirits Dance Mambo: Growing Up Nuyorican in El Barrio" is an excellent read in my opinion. As a student of African spirituality I gathered so much information from reading this book and from the words of wisdom Ms.Vega so lovingly remembers from her Abuela. I got a notebook and a pen and diligently took notes on such things as how to spiritually cleanse a house and what incense to use to keep unwanted spirits away. Like a previous reader I cried at the end of the book especially since Ms.Vega is the only one in her nuclear family left; all of her immediate family is now in the spirit world and in the case of her older sister,Socorro there is no date or details of her untimely death. Ms.Vega skillfully depicts in her memoir the co-existence of both the spirit and the human worlds and shows us that even though loved ones have passed on they are still here to protect us. This book really shows the importance of the human spirit in our family and communities which seemed so prevalent in the 1950's and 1960's when Ms.Vega grew up in El Barrio but is sadly lacking in families and communties today destroyed by drugs and violence. I especially liked Ms.Vega's descriptions of how spirit guides and the spirits themselves possess a "medium" of which abuela is one and how the Puerto Rican families in El Barrio really relied on the wisdom and guidance of these spirit guides. This book also shows how music and spirit are entertwined whether used in worshipping the African dieties are on the stages of major concert halls like the Palladium and Apollo Theaters. This memoir is one that is unique amongst most family memoirs because this one focuses on ancestral and familial spiritual ties that make us who we are. Very well done Ms.Moreno.

a fantastic, unique memoir...

Kudos to Marta Moreno Vega for this beautifully written, heartfelt memoir. When the Spirits Dance Mambo brings to life the hopes and dreams of Puerto Ricans living in East Harlem in the 50s and 60s. The book opens with young Marta and her sister Chachita huddled under the bed covers with a telephone. Their brother is on the line, and he's at the Palladium club, listening to live mambo music by some of the worlds best musicians. He holds up the receiver of the pay phone so his sisters can experience the music. In Marta's world, the mambo, and the other songs and rhythms of the Carribean, is everything. Her elderly grandmother--the most extraordinary character in this book--tells her that music is the connection between people and the spirits who guide and protect them. Her parents--a hard-working immigrant couple--are transformed into an elegant lady and gentleman when they dance together in the family's living room.

This memoir is an excellent coming-of-age story that reminded me a little of Esmeralda Santiago's When I was Puerto Rican, but the emphasis on music, and on the mystic Santeria religion, makes it a much more rewarding read. You come to know and love the Morenos and especially Marta's abuela. It's an amazing portrait of one author's past told through words and music. I highly recommend this book.

excellent real-life story

I actually cried at the end of this book. I bought it the day it went on sale and read it pretty much into the night. Marta Vega's story is both unique and universal. This book tells the story of her growing up in Spanish Harlem (El Barrio) and portrays the loving, close-knit working class who raised her. Her mama and abuela come across as very strong, resilient women, particularly her grandmother, who was an amazing soul. The book's title takes its name from the Latin/Island music that played everywhere in their neighborhood and home, and the orishas--spirit guardians--who Marta learned about from her grandmother. This is a very memorable, moving book. READ IT!

Good basics on US government

You can tell Cal Jillson tries his best to present an unbiased view of the US government in this textbook. He mostly succeeds, but his bias is exposed at points in the book. Many chapters end with a suggestion for reforming the government, and many of these involve continuing down a progressive course. Additionally, he insists on calling the US a democracy, even after stating we were founded as a federated representative republic. This is a bit misleading, as far as I know no constitutional changes have taken place since 1788 to have changed our system of government into a democracy, but that doesn't stop the author from insisting on it. The US "democracy" is often compared to other governments in Europe, which are structured quite differently, usually showing how much "better" they are at certain social issues, such as voting (in this chapter the author advocates for mandatory voter registration).

I have, overall though, found this textbook an enjoyable read. I have taken the initiative and read through most of it before my US Government class (POS 2041 here in Florida) even began. Most of the historical perspectives are non-biased. As this is an earlier version, the huge tea party uprising and all of the potential social effects on the future of government due to it is not covered here (I hope it is in his newest edition).

An Interesting Approach to Political Science

Most people will purchase this book because it is a required textbook for an American Government or Political Science class in college. However, this book makes an interesting read for those who just want to know more about their political and governmental system here in the United States.

The author takes a nice approach at teaching the different subjects throughout the book by using real world examples. There are a number of asides where the author spends one page telling the reader about a particular issue, event, or process and then asking the reader some challenge questions to make you think and learn the material.

In all this is a nice book. The price is not horrible for a textbook and the author does a good job of keeping the material interesting. I think anyone who gets this book will be pleased with the material and the manner in which it is presented. I would definitely suggest purchasing this book.

Kindle version for iPhone is incomplete

This book is very interesting. I am on chapter 2 as I write this and I have really enjoyed learning how our country formed. The only problem is that the formatting for the Kindle iPhone and iPad apps is really horrible. There are large gaps between pages and paragraphs end abruptly. The next paragraph starts and I can tell that the end of the paragraph is missing. Since I am reading this for a class - I'm concerned I'm missing out on important info and wanted to make sure this error was pointed out for others. Might be better to purchase the hard copy.

About the Author
Alisa Solomon teaches at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where she directs the Arts & Culture concentration in the MA program. A theater critic and general reporter for The Village Voice from 1983 to 2004, she has also contributed to The New York Times, The Nation, Tablet, The Forward, and other publications. Her first book, Re-Dressing the Canon: Essays on Theater and Gender, won the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism. She lives in New York City.

A detailed examination of the history and impact of an icon

The story of Tevye and Anatevka has taken on a cultural life of its own, as has the music from the "Fiddler on the Roof". The worldwide impact is all the more impressive when we look at the story's origins in a series of Yiddish short stories written by Sholem-Aleichem in the decades that bridge the 19th and 20th centuries. The path from these beginnings to Broadway and Hollywood success was neither straightforward nor easy, and it was not clear that these stories would find wide acceptance. That the story has been so wildly successful is a tribute to the efforts of the many people who worked so hard to interpret and transform the stories, while preserving something essential that seems to speak to widely diverse audiences.

This book is a detailed examination of the history of that transformation, from the original short stories, through various efforts to adapt them to the stage, to the ultimate Broadway and Hollywood triumphs that mark the "Fiddler on the Roof". Along the way, it touches on issues as widely divergent as the immigration and assimilation struggles of Eastern European Jews in the US in the first half of the 20th century, the history of American theater in the middle of the century, and the cultural impact that the musical has had since it opened on Broadway in the mid-1960s.

At times, the level of detail swamps the narrative, but it attests to the depth of the author's research into the history and impact of this work. There are parts of this book that are likely to appeal to a wide range of readers, from those who want to understand the effort it takes to construct a Broadway musical, to those who want to better understand the cultural and political concerns of Jewish immigrants a century ago. Personally, I found the discussion of the impact of the musical to be interesting, especially the role it has taken on in helping Poland address its history in the wake of the Holocaust and the Soviet era.

So the book itself is a mixed bag, and different readers will probably struggle with different parts of it. But there is a lot of information her for a reader willing make the effort.

Entertaining, enjoyable and.........wonderful.

WONDER OF WONDERS, A CULTURAL HISTORY OF FIDDLER ON THE ROOF by Alisa Solomon is, in a single word,'WONDERFUL!' This author has done an exceptional job of providing an energetic tone to a narrative that is enjoyable and fun to read. Included in the engaging history of how FIDDLER came to be are true behind-the-scene stories about very colorful showbiz personalities and other characters that the reader comes to know and (usually) love. Often hilarious,sometimes intense and always entertaining, these true tales are just one way that the author captivates her audience. WONDER OF WONDERS is both powerful and entertaining, just like FIDDLER ON THE ROOF- it is a must have/must read for all FIDDLER fans.

A brilliant, meticulously researched scholarly book

I first fell in love with FIDDLER ON THE ROOF when I saw it performed on stage. I was twelve years old. My family played the record (LP) so many times, there were grooves within the grooves. In 1971, I again fell in love with FIDDLER when the movie, staring Israeli actor, Chaim Topol,was released. And now I have fallen in love with FIDDLER all over again thanks to Alisa Solomon's scholarly book, WONDER OF WONDERS, A CULTURAL HISTORY OF FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Solomon is a brilliant writer who, through meticulous research (all notated) details a complete history and evolution of a phenomenon that, even today, 50 years after first appearing on Broadway, continues to 'speak' to a global audience, crossing many different cultures and faith backgrounds. Solomon's ability to recognize, impeccably research and cohesively and flawlessly describe precisely how FIDDLER became such a beloved global gem, is, in itself, a phenomenon. Solomon provides an encyclopedic knowledge of her subject, and in so doing, offers an erudite compilation that includes rare pictures and wonderful anecdotes taken from interviews (also meticulously documented) with surviving FIDDLER participants and their children. Anyone that loves FIDDLER will love-and learn--from this book.

Now let me tell you what an absolute thrill you are in for!
Some of the artwork found in those Warren Magazines of the sixties and seventies, is among the greatest ever produced for the comic medium. The names are legendary; we know them all.
Some of the best artwork done during that heady time was by a guy named Berni Wrightson, who subsequently put the "e" back on his first name.
Mr. Wrightson is one of our greatest living comic artists, and some of HIS best work was seen in these pages.
So...take EVERYTHING he did for Warren, in a ridiculously affordable but lovingly produced package...and you have one of the archival collections of the year.
You will sit goggle-eyed and astonished at the brushwork here, beautifully reproduced on thick stock.
Stories I can remember as if I read them yesterday are here. "The Black Cat", "Jenifer", "The Pepper Lake Monster", "Nightfall", "Cool Air"...and to have "The Muck Monster" in brilliant, lurid color is a treat in and of itself.
The exquisite frontispieces from Creepy and Eerie are all here too.
There are a few surprises here as well; the context of which are illuminated by a heart-tugging introduction by Bruce Jones. Definitely read it before you start. It's well worth your time.
For fans of Creepy and Eerie, this is a must-buy. I guarantee you'll be completely satisfied.

Great price, even better book

I first came to these stories after both Creepy and Eerie had been canceled for a few years, and Bruce Jones and Pacific Comics were really the only ones carrying the torch for 70s-style horror comics into the 80s, which was FINE BY ME. Having missed those glory days by a few years, I treasured in particular a series of colorized reprints of Mr. Wrightson's work entitled "Bernie Wrightson: Master of the Macabre." This fine book will cost you less than buying all of those issues today, and the reproduction of his art is much, much better here as well. Wrightson's imagination is ghoulish, humorous, passionate, and raised the art of horror storytelling to then-new heights. One of the best examples is the Jones/Wrightson classic "Jenifer": a fiendishly memorable look into sex, murder and obsession, recently filmed by horror maestro Dario Argento for the "Masters Of Horror" TV series. Even if you're already planning to buy every Creepy and Eerie Archive volume, this smaller book is worth the investment, as much love was lavished on every page. And it's a bargain, too.

The Greatest Horror Illustrator of ALL Time!!!

My first exposure to Bernie Wrightsons' phenomenal artwork was in Stephen Kings' "Cycle of the Werewolf" novel when I was a youngster. From that point on I was hooked. The man is a bona fide master of the macabre & this book really showcases the versatility and the tremendous depth of his talent. Nobody but Bernie Wrightson can make a rotting corpse "beautiful" or a slavering, gore-soaked werewolf "graceful". If you are a fan of old school comic book art or classic "Tales From The Crypt" type horror stories , you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this book. You get a wide variety of amazing Creepy stories complete with a cover illustration gallery and the whole nine yards. The art is exquisite and will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that NOBODY ever has nor ever will be his equal in the realm of horror illustration. If the preceding recommendations haven't convinced you, then allow me to tell you that several years ago I actually had the honor of meeting Mr. Wrightson at a comic convention. He was one of the most gracious and humble professional artists that I've ever met and he earned a lifelong fan for taking the time to talk to and encourage a young fan and wannabe horror artist to keep on practicing and to never give up. I haven't made it big yet, but I haven't stopped practicing and I'll never give up. Thanks for being a class act Mr. Wrightson.
