IRT in your Pocket

Do not let its small size make you underestimate the scope of this book. Although Demars' IRT can be considered to be an introductory book (and requires almost no math/stats background) it covers a variety of topics about Item Response Theory. As a result of a comprehensive survey of the related literature, the author provides nuggets of information about a wide rage of rules of thumb and analysis alternatives. But I must warn that due to its direct approach and a kind of fast pace, this book is not the best option if it will be your first encounter with IRT. On the other hand, you will get the most of it if you have some conceptual experience and planning to develop a IRT-based scale (or conduct an IRT Analysis) for the first time. It may sound weird but the biggest downside of the book is that it is an IRT book! That means the author does not subscribe to the Rasch Measurement Philosophy (Of course this will not be viewed as a flaw by many).

About the Author
Fabián A. Samaniego earned his B.A. degree at New Mexico State University and completed his graduate work at the University of Iowa. He taught four years at Utah State University before going to the University of California at Davis, where he served as coordinator of the first-year Spanish program and supervisor of teaching assistants for 24 years. He also served as assistant director of several Foreign Language Competency projects for the Los Angeles and San Francisco Unified School Districts, and for the Santa Clara and Sacramento County Offices of Education. In addition, he served on the steering committee of the California Foreign Language Teacher Preparation Project and on the California Foreign Language Project Policy Board. He is frequently asked to conduct in-service workshops for schools and universities across the country. Samaniego's first-year college text, DÍMELO TÚ!, is in its sixth edition, and his intermediate text, MUNDO 21, recently published in its fourth edition. He is a co-author of LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN LEARNING: TEACHING SPANISH TO NATIVE SPEAKERS OF SPANISH and of DIME!, a seven-book school series that includes a two-year native Spanish speaker's program: Tu mundo and Nuestro mundo.

Francisco Rodriguez Nogales is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the School of Modern Languages at Santa Barbara City College. He is a specialist in the use of technology in foreign-language teaching and online instruction--his teaching load has been 100 percent online for the past five years. He also has developed several Spanish assessment and placement tools. Nogales was born in Pedrera (Seville), Spain. He completed his bachelor of arts at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, his master's at San Francisco State University, and his Ph.D. at the University of California at Davis.

i like this book but want to point out a few ...

i like this book but want to point out a few items that are incorrect. On page 94 he states that Graciela Iturbide was the youngest of 13 children when I heard her state in the Art 21 video that she was the eldest. Lillian Bassman continued to photograph different subjects after she quit the fashion industry. (Pg 34). My reference is the retrospective on Lillan Bassman and Paul Himmel published to accompany their show in Europe. It talks about her later work in the 1970s. Some may think she stopped phpotographing all together but she continued to work on abstract images.

This is a very generic book with basic notations used. Some of the examples break the semantics of BPMN. I would avoid using this as an example for BPMN modeling.

interesting viewpoint poorly argued

I found this book interesting for it's viewpoint but unconvincing. I was suprised by a Germany that did not want and even feared the coming war, and a France that seemed absolutely hungry for war, manipulating a somewhat pathetic Russia into fighting the central powers. It was a viewpoint different than I'd seen in the past and I appreciate the questions it has raised for me. However, I felt the author did a poor job of proving his points. While it is probably impossible to measure and describe the popular feeling of an era decades in the past, I thought Turner's haphazard quoting from memoirs (some written after the war) was remarkably unconvincing. I believe he could have proven just about any thesis imaginable using that technique. I felt he left out some important aspects of the Franco-Russian perspective that would make their actions seem less irrationally agressive. All in all, I'm glad I read the book as it opened my eyes to another line of thinking. I'm not sure I'll end up agreeing with Turner, but I'll definitely seek out other books from other authors with the same point of view.

good book on fascinating subject

It was back on 29 March 1968 that I finished reading Sidney Bradshaw Fay's two volume work on The Origins of the World War (when he wrote, "first" was not necessary). And then on 31 July 1980 I read Fritz Fischer's bombshellic work, Germany's Aims in the First World War. And on May 8, 1986 I finished reading Luigi Albertini's three-volume The Origins of the War 1914. On Nov 14, 1992 I read John W. Langdon's July 1914: The Long Debate, 1918-1990. The subject long has held my interest but not till now did I read Professor Turner's slim and highly readable study. He disputes Fischer on a number of points, and it is neat that an Australian contests Fischer's indictment of Germany. But as one reads one cannot but help but think how bitterly the July 1914 actors on the world stage must have regretted their then actions and inactions as the grim statistics of death and disaster mounted in the years after 1914--and all the world with them. Though over 30 years old I found this work valuably insightful.

There is a dearth of published research into this event which sent world history off in a different trajectory. This book explains the origins very well.

If you want to understand the big picture of Visual Tools for Project Management this book is a good one. It explains 21 different tools with examples and useful links. It took me about a week to read and I think I'll keep coming back each tool's description as needed.

I didn't knew exactly how war rooms can be set up and the section on this tool is enough to get me started. As I said this book is a big map of what's out there. Don't expect to become the expert in every tool, but do expect to understand which tools you want to use for your next project/report.
