About the Author
Betsy Sholl is the author of seven collections of poetry, including Late Psalm and Don’t Explain, 1997 winner of the Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry. A former poet laureate of Maine, Sholl teaches at the University of Southern Maine and in the MFA Program of Vermont College. She lives in Portland, Maine.

Reliable, Intricate, Expertly Crafted

There is a sturdy reliability to these poems (I've returned to some of them multiple times since first reading) and yet they sing precisely because of how intricately they are crafted. The specificity of Betsy Sholl's language and the precision of her syntax carry each poem’s emotional heft. Sholl is the master of associative moves and unlikely connections, both elements that drive the structure of her poems, all in the pursuit of sharing with readers things that might be otherwise unseeable.
OTHERWISE UNSEEABLE will comfort, challenge, and expose the way readers view the world of these poems. They will make one smile, make one think, make one come back to them for a second or third look. Who knows how many books of poetry go unnoticed every year, every week? We know this. What we might not realize, as in the town of the poem “Latcho Drom: ‘Safe Journey’,” is how much we might miss. A “flock of gypsies” arrive in the town, “roost in an old tree” and “hang sheets/ for loose billowing walls”, but they are later driven out because “a town wants roofs, wants rent, rules.” What if we run the same risk when we fail to notice poetry as insightful and expertly crafted as Sholl’s?

At dawn, the town wakes
to wooden wheel clatter, horse hooves,

feel of something missing, snatched.
We don’t know what.

About the Author

Joan Coy

Joan Coy has taught High School Math and Science in Canada for over 30 years. She is currently Principal of PAVE, a Grade 4 to 12 on-line school using Moodle as the LMS. A Moodle Certified Teacher, she administers on the PAVE site, and has taught online Moodle training courses with Open2Know. Joan chairs an Alberta wide educator group for the purpose of sharing Moodle courses and best practices and, as well, serves on the Program Committee for the Canadian Moodlemoot. This is all part of her passion for this open source Virtual Learning Environment. She has presented provincially, nationally and internationally on topics relating to teaching mathematics, on-line education, Moodle and assessment.

Aside from working, Joan is part of a landscaping tree farm in Northwestern Alberta with her two children. She enjoys painting, making stained glass, travel, skiing, and gardening in her free time.

Excellent "How To" for Optical Designers

In the acknowledgements the authors state they "wanted to create a book in the field of optical system design that was clear and easy to understand" - Mission accomplished!

This book is indeed easy to understand but nevertheless provides detailed explanations of how to design an optical system. While not deeply mathematical there are sufficent formulaes provided (with examples) so you can understand what to do and how to do it. If you were puzzled as to why achromatic lenses are used you won't be after you read this book. The book also explains how distortion occurs and how to get rid of it. Also there are sections on mechanical components such as lens mounting etc. The book also explains how to use typical optical design software.

My only (slight) dissapointment was the relatively few descriptions of typical systems - but using the book you could design these from first principles. Also to be fair there are so many designs out there that this is probabaly asking too much.

I bought this book because as an electronics engineer I did not know enough about optical systems to be able to design one. Reading this book and downloading some freeware optical design software (and using the book to help understand the outputs) has solved that problem

One of the best technical books I own

Having studied the comments on four other books before holding my breath and purchasing "Optical System Design," I was still worried that it would turn out to be a physics-oriented treatment of the subject despite the comments.

I was happily surprised.

Not only is this book well- and often humorously-written (to me at least), it has memorable explanations which make applying the knowledge easier.

In particular, the excellent treatment throughout the book on the six major third-order aberrations' causes has helped me use my optical design tools more correctly. I do not guess about specific changes, I know what to expect when making a change in the design.

I have found over the years that purchasing two texts on a topic is a good strategy. One must be a "thick book," like "Optical System Design," and the other a "thin book" which serves as a map. I'm still looking for the "thin" compliment to OD, but its layout and index are good enough that I will probably not follow my normal pattern.

a bit disappointed

Based on other reviews, you expect a highly polished product - full of glossy enlightening diagrams and explanations. The book is OK and conveys many important notions of optics adequately, especially if you have some background knowledge. However, at times, it feels like a potpourri, too wide to be under control and lacking in rigor. The authors present a few formulas at times and assure us that they could write many more "if they wanted to". However, this book really feels like the work of practitioners - a bit thin on the theory side. Many figures have a printing quality too low to be readable (so much for the Nyquist criteria, which by no coincidence is presented quite poorly) and the chapter on diffractive optics is a didactic catastrophe. Just because a book has been around for a long time and is respected in the field doesn't mean that it can't be improved upon. Still, I find myself reading the book time and again. The book will complement nicely Born and Wolf, which lies at the other extreme.

Was Sigmund Freud a "Freudian"? If "Freudian" means an uninvolved, neutral interpreter of transference and resistance, the answer, according to this fascinating new book, is no, he was not. Based on existing full-length accounts by patients who were treated by Freud in the 1920s and '30s, this volume reveals an unexpected Freud - one who is quite different from the current stereotype. Presented together for the first time, these vivid, intimate biographies of the analytic process provide an illuminating close-up of Sigmund Freud at work. Through the words of his own patients, the reader is introduced to an organized, persistent, personally engaged, and expressive clinician who relied on free association, rather than transference and resistance analysis, to move the treatment. The authors examine these cases, along with those of the well-known Rat Man and Wolf Man, to see how Freud organized the treatment dyad in terms of its primary task and the division of labor between himself and his patient. They then compare their findings with Freud's papers on technique and with the dominant ideals of mainstream, contemporary psychoanalysis. Contrary to the capricious Freud of in-house clinical lore, the starched Freud of Strachey's Standard Edition, and the blank screen of traditional orthodoxy, Lohser and Newton demonstrate that Freud was explicit about defining the primary task (making the unconscious conscious), directively instituted free association as the means to accomplish the task, and actively monitored his patient's compliance with it. The authors also demonstrate the implications of Freud's actual approach for the nature of the analytic relationship. Since Freud relied on freeassociation, rather than transference and resistance analysis, he could be more spontaneous and personal. In contrast, by making transference analysis the engine of the treatment, the contemporary clinician ends up subordinating the entirety of his or her behavior to protecting the transference; neutrality, unilaterality, and extreme abstinence are inevitable consequences. This may be a good way to do psychoanalysis, but it turns out not to be Freudian. Opening an important debate about the nature of Freudian practice as Sigmund Freud himself practiced it, Lohser and Newton contend that the cases presented in this volume clearly demonstrate that the dominant image of the Freudian analyst is not, in fact, classical, but rather a neo-orthodox stereotype.

About the Author
Beate Lohser has been a member of the Core Faculty at the San Francisco School of Psychology since 1989. Born and raised in Germany, she attended the University of Heidelberg where she received degrees in English and French. She was trained in psychology at the Wright Institute in Berkeley, California, and has worked in a wide variety of settings. She practices psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy in San Francisco and Berkeley.
