Purchased this book for a friend who has his master's in Energy Engineering. He wants to change the Energy Policy in Afghanistan and was in great need of this book. It took us over 2 months and loads of trouble to get the book there. I hope that it provided good value and became a good resource for the Engineering Faculty in Kabul University. Compelling arguments in favor of opening up the educational supply-side in American public schools

Carl Bistany is an outstanding educator, (the book is co-written with journalist Stephanie Buckley). He’s a man with a big heart who I’ve had the privilege of observing over a period of time as he wrestled with the problem of improving educational opportunity in some of the world’s difficult places, including in Iraq, inner-city America and of course his native Lebanon. This book focuses on the American situation; it is his impassioned plea to open up the supply side in American public education, to the greater benefit of underprivileged children.

The argument is compelling: there is a ‘gridlock’ in educational reform in America which leaves many of the most disadvantaged children stuck in failing schools, deprived of the educational opportunities from which they could benefit (Chapter 1). There is a way forward, through charter schools, a route that the evidence shows is beneficial to the most disadvantaged (Chapter 4 highlights this evidence). But politics gets in the way of beneficial reform, with those in power and, especially, the teacher unions, opposed to charter school reform (chapter 5). Moreover, there are ‘hurdles and roadblocks’ against properly opening up the supply side, with many against for-profit providers in particular (Chapter 3); but why in a ‘time of crisis’ would anyone want to ‘limit our options’ and stifle innovation and entrepreneurship in education, especially that which benefits the disadvantaged? (Chapter 2).

Given the ‘many challenges’ that create hurdles to entrepreneurs entering the public school sector in America, ‘you might rightly ask why entrepreneurs bother at all?’ (p. 73). Optimistically, the authors point out that these hurdles can be overcome, at least ‘when the stars are aligned’ (Chapter 7); the final chapter outlines policy recommendations that could make this happen more often (Chapter 9). This includes the ‘ACT SMART’ acronym, because the charter school movement needs a ‘rallying cry’ (p. 141).

The tone of the book is optimistic and upbeat throughout, even when some of the stories told have clearly tested the optimism of those involved at the heart of the process. For instance, the opening story is of the SABIS charter school in Springfield, Mass., where the company wanted to take over the worst performing school in the district but was eventually allowed to take over the second worst performer. I’ve been to the school myself: it is now one of the best schools I’ve seen anywhere in the world. It deserves its genuine waiting list of 3,000 students (confirmed each term to check that parents really are still interested). Yet when SABIS applied for another charter in nearby Brockton, Mass, they were turned down – the struggle is reported in Chapter 5 on ‘Politics and power plays’.

The political inhibitions against companies like SABIS trying to operate under such conditions inevitably cripples the supply side and leads to huge levels of unmet demand. For instance, in 2013, ‘charter schools in Illinois received almost 30,000 more applications than they had seats to grant’ (p. 51). In Massachusetts, the supply is so limited by the state cap that there are 45,000 students on charter school waiting lists. Nationwide it is more than 600,000. This is huge untapped demand that those in power are determined to thwart. Even when, as the authors point out, the ‘people most vehemently opposed to school choice rarely have children in failing schools’ (p. 71). Indeed, many have their own children in private schools, or have paid significantly to have their homes in the catchment areas of high quality schools. It is the poor who suffer failing schools. Through writing this book, Bistany seeks to challenge this stark unfairness.

It seems an uphill struggle, and if anyone deserves to win it, it will be people like Bistany. But is it a winnable struggle? Here there is an unanswered question for me. Could a company like SABIS also consider creating ultra low-cost private schools to help meet the frustrated demand on charter school waiting lists? This would be a route that also brings in the ‘T” of the ACT SMART acronym, ‘Turn to the free market’. Yes, energetically pursue the charter school route and succeed where this is feasible. But why not explore this other free market route too? It may also be a good way forward for committed educators like Carl Bistany, who seek improved educational opportunities for all, including those most disadvantaged by the current system.

It's inspiring, however it lacks a lot in the way of texts for just simple flirting without looking pathetic or needy. There needs to be another book with messages that are more simple that can inspire conversation or interest, thank the guy for a date, just say you were thinking about him, talk about some feature you like about him, just simple flirty stuff.

Be warned

First a disclaimer - this is a wonderful book, one of the finest textbooks of pathology ever written. Rather, my complaint is regarding the quality of the printing - the book I received is a facsimile (at full price) with poor elementary printing errors - badly done margins, poor quality pictures, and cheap paper - the whole book has a 'scanned-and-reprinted' look. Even if it were half price I would be dissatisfied by this shabby quality.

So if you want to buy this book (and I highly recommend it), buy it directly from the publisher or from somewhere else.

Fantastic for general pathology !

This is absolutely a great book. It has a lot of positive aspects: 1. easy to read 2. enough details 3. nice anecdotes which are written in smaller letters 4. easy to find what your looking for by bold, italic and underlined words 5. good table contents 6. good diagrams as well 7. at the end of each chapter a good summery
You may ask "If it's so good why 4 stars instead of 5?". Well, the pictures are in black and white. I like coloured books myself.

Tony Ulwick is an indisputable leader and pioneer in JTBD. This volume summarizes over 25 (!) years of experience consulting hundreds of a customers. His detail and precision is mesmerizing, and it's all laid out here for us to learn from.

Ulwick presents the only end-to-end process for using JTBD, called Outcome Driven Innovation (ODI). His framework is robust and complete, including a look at job executors, core jobs, related jobs, emotional jobs and more. In this book, Ulwick even reveals the 84 detailed steps of ODI. And of course he supports everything with examples and case studies.

Title: The JTBD Growth Strategy Matrix is amazing

Ulwick makes it clear who the real thought leader is in this space. In stark contrast to other recent books on the subject, which are heavy on stories and light on substance, Ulwick details the implications of jobs theory and a well-thought-out and proven process for putting the theory into practice.

I was surprised to read about the JTBD Growth Strategy Matrix. This was an unexpected gem. Ironically, Ulwick uses Jobs Theory to effectively explain disruptive innovation and 4 other possible growth strategies. His growth strategy matrix makes sense of high-end and low-end disruption, and all other possible product strategies. For the first time, I could rationalize Christensen’s disruptive innovation work, the critiques to his theory and the opposing views. Ulwick provides a simple way to think about a very complex problem. An exciting new perspective! Thank you!

It covers population growth, ageing, migration and mobility, parenting, health inequalities, and much more. While stressing the complexity of population dynamics, it does a fine job of unpacking this by taking each aspect in turn and setting out the relevant theories, definitions, measures and research findings. very detailed!

This is currently the only book available for the Lenormand Cards in English - and its quite detailed! I am not sure about the other review, but this book gives enough information to pick up the cards and do a detailed reading. The author has given all possible combinations - and explains that if you want to read these cards then you have to look at the interpretation of each combination. He even lists different meanings as to health issues, love and romance, work and employment and shows how the meaning of the combination changes depending on the questions asked.

What makes this book truly valuable though are additional information and hints as to how to avoid burn-out as a reader and how to take care of yourself if you are a professional fortune teller. I have already had one telephone reading with the author and was very impressed about the detailed information he gave me!

This book is excellent and I can't wait for the course that is mentioned in the back of the book to become available!

Finally, a book to not only help with the Lenormand card readings, but to include help for the reader! I was very impressed with this book! The outline allowed for a beginner to do a detailed reading, and for a skilled reader, more information to do a very detailed reading! VERY IMPRESSIVE! The extra information on focus,baths, and how to avoid reader's burnout was a plus! I have recommended this book to many tarot readers & will continue to recommend this book to my students. An instant classic!

Poorly Written Book

I've purchased all the available English books and E books about The Lenormand Oracle and I must say this is the worst book. The best is the E book by Iris Treppner "Treppner Lenormand Correspondence Course", truly informative, followed by "The Secrets Of The Lenormand Oracle" by Sylvie Steinbach.

I waited excitedly for this book to arrive and "The Game Of Destiny" book was a total disappointment. The information was too little, the book had a"Kindergarten pre school children book" feel whereby every page had more empty spaces than printed words! For the price I paid, (this book cost much more than the 2 books I mentioned above)including the shipping charges, its truly a waste of money!!!

My feeling is that the writer wanted to jump into the bandwagon due to the lack of English books regarding The Lenormand divination System and a growing interest in The Lenormand. A poorly hastily, written book was the result. I feel "RIPPED"!
