We really needed something like this.

I'm one of those embarrassingly huge fans of this show so it was kind of a given that I was going to love this book. But let me tell y'all why it's good and why it's important.

This is Ruby and Sapphire's story of love and freedom. I think we all know that a children's storybook that's about a "she" falling in love with a "she" is bound to get some raised eyebrows in a world that thinks relationships like theirs can never be innocent, but I would prefer not to focus on that much at all. I just want to say that it's so vital that children see these relationships in the same context that they see cross-sex relationships--and it's not JUST so kids who have same-sex crushes and attractions can see themselves and know they can get fairy tale endings too. It's also for the rest of you--and if those of you who aren't queer can imagine growing up with no books about people like you, you might start to get the idea.

But you might not be able to really understand, because you probably CAN'T imagine how devastating it is--when there don't seem to be nice words that describe you, or when futures for people like you don't seem to exist, or when you want to know where you are in the literature people get upset, or when people talk to you like it either doesn't matter that you're invisible or that you're disgusting for wanting that. We want to be in stories because stories are how humanity talks to itself. If we aren't in them, we also learn very young that we don't truly get to participate in human life.

So I want to say thank you to everyone who made it possible for something like this to exist. I'm so happy, but also relieved--and a little exasperated that something this sweet and pure took this long to get here because some people look at it and don't see it for what it it is.

So what is it?

Yes, this story features the beginning of the love between Ruby and Sapphire, though it still doesn't really delve into that. We see very little of their time together. We see them both being sort of in awe of each other--Ruby being amazed that Sapphire would want to be around someone like her when she's an aristocrat and has amazing powers to see beyond time, and Sapphire being amazed that Ruby's courage upended what she thought was inevitable--and we get a peek at the way they look at each other.

What we do see more of is their decision to become a Fusion together--the ability the Gem characters have to meld into each other and become another person who represents their relationship. (But also the new Gem will have her own thoughts and feelings, her own new appearance, and her own attitude built from what her component Gems inspire in each other.) In Sapphire and Ruby's story, I think the Fusion relationship is a unique one--not just because she was the first of her kind in her society, but because the relationship between Ruby and Sapphire is now forever changed by how they feel about becoming another entity together. They will eventually fully love each other, but that love will always be influenced by what they've experienced as a Fusion.

And everything about their relationship is about possibility, opportunity, novelty, freshness, and power. Rubies in Gem society are supposed to be simple soldiers who do what they're told and fight with their comrades. Sapphires in Gem society are supposed to be wise seers who don't let their emotions affect what happens next. When Ruby made a choice that Rubies aren't supposed to make, Sapphire helplessly watched a future develop that wasn't in the plan. And both of them found what they'd rather be instead. I really appreciate that there was such a strong "supposed to" that the characters challenged without quite meaning to, and that leaving what they were accustomed to did cause them some distress. They had to find something new to be now that Ruby couldn't do what Rubies do and Sapphire couldn't do what Sapphires do. They realized there are multiple "supposed to's" for Gems like them, and fusing together into someone who had no "supposed to's" (because she wasn't supposed to exist) must have made it so much more joyous to explore what lay ahead.

The art is pretty special--lots of unsettling images (though nothing too scary), lots of beautiful images, and a different style from the cartoon--it's simplified and stylized, but it still gets plenty of emotion onto those little faces. The backgrounds are lovely as they generally are in the show, and the characters commenting on the text in a meta fashion and talking to each other from little alcoves (Sapphire above, Ruby below) was really powerful. There's narration, but there's also Sapphire and Ruby saying how they felt about what was happening, and expressing opinions about each other's statements and caring about each other's distress. Eventually, they go into each other's chambers, comment on how they feel, and share their perspectives. It seems simple but it's quite a nuanced metaphor and I think a lot of children will understand it despite the complexity.

Speaking of complexity, there are some concepts here that I think render this book most appropriate for people who have context from watching the TV show. The fusion concept isn't presented all that accessibly to new fans, and if you haven't seen the show before you don't know that when Gems' physical form is destroyed, they reform later (if their Gem isn't smashed). You don't get introduced to Pearl even though she's there, and you have no context for the illustration of Blue Diamond (and her Pearl), and even though Garnet is mentioned in the online description of the book, she's not called by name in the story itself (just like in the episode). It's also a little unclear in the book (but not the cartoon) why the other Gems were furious at them for fusing, but I guess the story had to be kept simple. There's also some complex language in the book--vocabulary words children in the target group probably won't see in school for a few more years--but the presentation makes me think they will have context to pick it up. I remember doing that a lot as a kid with children's books that slipped in an advanced word here and there.

I was hoping for a couple things I didn't get, but I don't blame books for not fulfilling expectations they didn't promise to fulfill. I was really hoping to hear a little more about the moment of Sapphire and Ruby's first fusion, because in the show fusion is supposed to be about being on the same wavelength, and it seemed almost incongruous that they could have fused at that moment amidst all that confusion. If they did, they must have temporarily wanted the same thing. I know what Ruby wanted--to save Sapphire--but I would have loved to see a glimpse of Sapphire wanting to be saved rather than just being sort of blindsided by the rescue. I would have been really interested to see more of that moment of escape into their unheard-of spontaneous relationship--the action that changed who they were figuratively and literally (not to mention saving the planet).

The overall package is really precious and looks the way it should--like an age-appropriate, fairy-tale-esque storybook that doesn't have anything strange or inappropriate at all. I can't even imagine reading this to a child and having them stop me to ask "wait, ARE THEY TWO GIRLS??" because it's just so smooth and well told, and the characters' casually presented embraces and nonchalant closeness uses the same cues we'd expect to see on a Disney princess dancing with her prince. It's just Not. An. Issue. Not in the book. Outside of the book, I imagine it will be. I hope the hubbub it creates is primarily positive.

And now, of course, it's made even more clear in this book that Garnet doesn't ask questions in the show because Rose told her not to and she took it quite literally. (She seems to get around asking questions with tricky wording, though, like instead of "What did you see?" she'll say "Tell me what you saw.") If you already ARE the answer, what questions could you need to ask?

And I've got to say Rebecca Sugar dedicating the book to Ian Jones-Quartey is really sweet.

Gay kids books make me so very happy

OMG I pre-ordered this and me and my GAY WIFE just SQUEALED WITH JOY when it arrived! The book is so cute, at the top Sapphire has a box and Ruby has one at the bottom and they give little comments throughout the story from their own perspectives. I love it when everything changes and Sapphire can't see the future anymore! and I'm proud to have a book like this in my collection as a gay mom with a kid! I want him to see so much variety in love! Also the book is larger and thicker than the typical "little golden book" style.

This book is so beautiful, honestly

This book is so beautiful, honestly. My favorite part about the book is that Ruby and Sapphire show up on the top and bottom of every page and as the story progresses, both end up leaving their boxes and moving around and fusing, it's adorable! I thought this would be more of the size of the typical little golden books but it's bigger than I thought which is awesome. The art direction is incredible and new and refreshing (much like Ruby and Sapphire's fusion) and it's definitely a unique book in its own right. A must have for any fan.

Actually, I've always believed that the conservative cry of liberal bias was maybe just a bit overdone. For all of you who still think that, be sure to read the book - it belongs in the library of every American who understands that a free press is integral and necessary to our way of life. Note the "free" part of free press. While the government isn't filtering your news, the news media is.
The media isn't just failing us, they're sabotaging democracy. If Goldberg has told even just part of the truth, many in the media deserve to be branded as traitors and hounded out of the business - not because they're liberals or have a liberal bias, but because they're liars, and deliberately misleading the American public.
The media has a right to report in any way they like. But they have an obligation to distinguish between fact and editorial comment. They have an obligation to report fact without regard to the political consequences of that fact. If they elect to add editorial comment to their reporting and acknowledge it as editorial comment, well, that's their right as American citizens. But to deliberately, maliciously lie to us about what is happening and what it means is immoral and unethical. To fail to distinguish between news and editorial comment is unethical. To suppress news or deliberately lie about the facts to advance a political agenda is unethical.
If Mr. Goldberg is only partially accurate, the major media in this country is incredibly corrupt. If he's completely accurate, they're irredeemably corrupt. I shudder to think what the consequences are for our society. Our representative democracy only really works with an educated electorate. One wonders whether the media have noticed that they're no different in 2001 than the old Soviet Pravda and Tass were in the bad old days.

Bitter? If so, why not?

I wonder why the author is frequently characterized as "bitter." My impression was that his tone was one of incredulity - he couldn't believe how warped some of his colleagues were, and he conveyed this by repetition and exclamation.
And if you read this book, you won't be able to believe the blatant bias and contempt for conservative America harbored by the media elite, who live in their own dream world where no contrarian viewpoint is to be heard.
More troubling are the accounts of how the news is regularly skewed to fit the media's view of how things *ought* to be - rather than how they really are. For example, how they "handled" pictures of a politically incorrect chain gang (too many Arfican Americans) ... how vital information is left out ... how labels are slapped on conservatives to portray them as fringe radicals.
Bitter? Well, why not? If you were constantly being targeted simply for exposing a bigotry run rampant, and trying to change it for the better, why not? Has it escaped anyone's notice that "The Dan" is quite a bitter person as well, allegedly nursing grudges for ever?
Finally the fatally flawed and damaging reporting on such vital issues as AIDS and discrimination are given a wider exposure. So many sheep get their news from the liberal media, it's no wonder so much hysteria is generated, so much time and money wasted (see virusmyth.org), so much hatred and anger towards conservatives.
For all its flaws - I wish the book were longer - this book is a wake-up call.

I really appreciate a non-ghost written, first hand account of what really happened. While this book lacks the prose of many offerings, this book more than compensates by pulling back the curtain on a power opinion-builder in our society, the evening national news. He never stoops to "prettying reality" and shows us the "people" that shape our national debate. While it may not be intentional, Goldberg shows that national media's liberal bias repeatedly precludes capturing balanced reporting. He also demonstrates how far out of sync the national media is with its audience in "fly-over country". It also shows how story content selection is driven by the need for ratings, an obvious but ugly reality. BTW Goldberg makes it clear that he is not a Republican and had never voted for a Republican Presidential candidate. He simply deplores the slanted reporting he sees and wants to turn a strong light on it. It is comical how reporters, who make a living investigating and criticizing others, have such a thin skin when the tables are turned. I hope I don't seem to merely be enjoying the discomfort of others in this regard, but I feel this was a book that really needed to be written.
My copy of the book arrived from amazon on December 12 and I haven't been able to put it down.

Dan Greenburg’s seventy-three books have been translated into twenty-four languages and include the two previous bestsellers in the Max Segal series, Love Kills and Exes. Riveting from beginning to end

I always found Dan Greenberg's articles from Playboy and New York Magazine very imaginative, but I went back and forth on buying his new book because I'm not a huge fan of thrillers. But I figured I'd give Greenberg a shot, and wow! Am I glad I did. Obviously, he did his research and knows his way around police procedure. But this guy is a seasoned pro in crafting a brilliant, original story with more impossible twists and turns than a cornfield maze. And like a maze, you wonder how Greenberg can conceivably navigate though. But he does it expertly and in a thoroughly entertaining way. It's an exciting ride from beginning to end, and like I say, I'm not really a fan of thrillers. But this book goes deeper than your average thriller. The characters are multi-dimensional and incredibly engaging. Each character "clicks." Greenberg brings them to life in such a vivid fashion, they suck you right into their world. The author's style is deceptively simple, yet phenomenally powerful. I recommend this book if you're up for an edge-of-your-seat adrenaline rush -- and want to enjoy a master story teller at the top of his game.

Max is Back!

What a great and novel concept for a book. People dying from the very things they fear the most. It doesn't get any worse than that, and for Greenburg fans like me, any better than this.

I've been reading Dan Greenburg's wonderful writing almost since the beginning, and waited patiently for many years for the next line in the Max Segal series, and he definitely did not disappoint, and the wait was so very worth it.

Immaculately researched and filled with details and color beyond your normal crime thriller, and packed with great Greenburg prose, I eagerly devoured every page until the surprising yet satisfying ending. Bravo Dan!

Shane Schimpf lives in Seattle, Washington. He attended Oberlin College, majoring in Philosophy and History, and then the University of Michigan where he was a doctoral student in Philosophy. His studies focused on Philosophy of Mind with special emphasis on theories of consciousness. After moving to Seattle in 1994, he pursued a career in information technology. When not working, Mr. Schimpf enjoys reading, writing, poker, basketball and exercising. This is his first published work.

Great compliment to Blood Meridian

A Reader's Guide to Blood Meridian gives insight to Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy.I first read the book, then I purchased this guide and reread Blood Meridian with this Reader's Guide page by page. This guide states the pages to which it refers to in Blood Meridian. This Reader's Guide matches pages perfectly with the 2001 edition of Blood Meridian from the Modern Library(printed on acid-free paper). I live in southeast Arizona after living 25 years in northern California and thought I recognized locations/towns etc..in the book. After I used this Reader's Guide I realized that I was incorrect about some of the locations, towns and villages in Blood Meridian. One location I thought was in California is just 5 miles from my home in Arizona. Shane Schimpi, the author,of A Reader's Guide to Blood Meridian gives history of the locations and actual people in the story. The details Schimpi lends on factual data and some made-up people gives vitality to this great story. The descriptions and factual information about the people, ranches, rivers, towns, dress, battles, equipment (including weapons),individual deserts (and many more items which I forget right now) make the Great Book "Blood Meridian" both real and alive. It is very easy for me to imagine the main cowboy, just a teenage boy, as he acts and reacts in multiple violent settings. I thoroughly enjoyed Blood Meridian without a reader's guide but with the guide by Mr Schumipf I have a greater understanding of the time and the people. They are no longer figments or characters in a story, but living people, even those who are total fabrications of Cormac McCarthy. This guide coordinates the history preceding the story, history that most likely influenced some men to such terrible violence, violence which is forever possible. The interpretation of the Spanish dialog in the book is justification enough to purchase this book. The Guide arrived before expected date and in perfect condition.

For anyone looking to improve their understanding of Blood Meridian, this guide is a must-have. It covers the novel in a clear, beginning-to-end format allowing you to refer back to the guide with ease any time that you come across one of the myriad unfamiliar words, phrases, historical persons and places found in McCarthy's rich literary landscape. There is an amazing amount of information packed in the pages, but because of its user-friendly format it would be useful tool for any reader of the book; someone using the guide as a Blood Meridian 'dictionary' of sorts will be served just as well as the reader looking for a comprehensive source of references, maps, translations and the like. The analysis of McCarthy's motivations is also interesting and well-argued; while one is hard pressed to ever really know what an author had in mind when writing a novel, the ideas presented here seem right on the mark.

A handy page-by-page reference.

The bulk of this book, the last 300 pages of it, presents a valuable addition to the crit-lit on Cormac McCarthy's masterpiece, BLOOD MERIDIAN. The definitions and historical notes are arranged in a reader-friendly page-by-page format, with translations of the foreign terms and astute explanations, elaborations, and speculations on the many arcane references.

Both scholars and casual readers will find this work rewarding, even if they already have copies of John Sepich's masterful NOTES ON BLOOD MERIDIAN, which preceded this work and is now also available in a new expanded edition.

I would now like to review the first fifty pages, Shane Schimpf's Nietzschean interpretation of the novel. While this interpretation is as valid as any, and might seem handy for college students, readers should be aware that it is not the only interpretation. Just one of many. I wish that Mr. Schimpf had published this separately, or had provided more notations of the alternative published arguments, or else had simply let readers choose their own interpretations. A guide should simply be a guide.

Mr. Schimpf states his opinion that the words of McCarthy's fictional Judge Holden express Cormac McCarthy's own philosophy. Again, readers new to McCarthy crit-lit should be aware that this is just one of many takes on the novel, among them the Christian, Gnostic, Marxist, and Buddhist interpretations. To me, the novel does not belong to the Judge, but to the kid, the conscript everyman.

Again, this is the second and improved edition of a valuable and handy resource, in which the author seeks out the primary historical sources for a closer look. Scholarship is never definitive and always ongoing, and readers of this work are encouraged to also dip into the great wealth of alternate Cormac McCarthy crit-lit now available.
