Another great read
By Tammy Stanley
Received this one free but I would have paid for it. Another great novel, a great twist on the historical gaps during this time period. Was surprised it was a stand alone however she did leave it open if she wanted to add another novel to this one.

Highly recommended historical fiction adventure.
By BookReader
I love all of K.T. Tomb books and this one didn't disappoint. Would like to see more in this series but as is this is a great standalone book. This book is about two kings battling it out for divine rights based on the Crusades.

Well written and a blast to read. Very entertaining with plenty of epic scenes and adventure. So fun getting lost in this book.

Highly recommended to any fan of K.T. Tomb or any fan of historical fiction, or action packed fast paced adventure books.

A short account of a long journey
By Gerald D. Matzke
This book had an interesting start and seemed to promise an exciting story as historical novel. It all too quickly turned into a fantasy adventure that brought the reader to the fulfillment of the quest and then ended without a real resolution of the conflict between the nation characters. For that reason it was a bit disappointing.

Coleridge: Early Visions, 1772-1804, by Richard Holmes

Winner of the 1989 Whitbread Prize for Book of the Year, this is the first volume of Holmes's seminal two-part examination of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one of Britain's greatest poets. Coleridge: Early Visions is the first part of Holmes's classic biography of Coleridge that forever transformed our view of the poet of 'Kubla Khan' and his place in the Romantic Movement. Dismissed by much recent scholarship as an opium addict, plagiarist, political apostate and mystic charlatan, Richard Holmes's Coleridge leaps out of the page as a brilliant, animated and endlessly provoking figure who invades the imagination. This is an act of biographical recreation which brings back to life Coleridge's poetry and encyclopaedic thought, his creative energy and physical presence. He is vivid and unexpected. Holmes draws the reader into the labyrinthine complications of his subject's personality and literary power, and faces us with profound questions about the nature of creativity, the relations between sexuality and friendship, the shifting grounds of political and religious belief.

From Publishers Weekly
This 1989 winner of England's Whitbread Prize, the first of two volumes, discusses with admiration the Romantic man of letters's impulsive personality, his exotic poetry and critical essays,pk and his relationships with and influences on prominent writers of the period. PW called this "a work of narrative skill, outstanding scholarship and original interpretation." Illustrated.

From Library Journal
A winner of the Whitbread Prize for biography, this first of what will be a two-volume biography of Coleridge is superb. Holmes ( Footsteps, LJ 9/15/85; Shelly, LJ 5/15/75) has indeed "taken Coleridge into the open air." By brushing aside the givens of critical opinion without dismissing them and making extensive use of the letters and notebooks, a fresher Coleridge emerges. It is still the Coleridge with drug and financial problems, a tendency toward plagiarism and murky thought, the dreaming schemer, but he somehow comes out of this account more a fascinating character than a literary relic. The British rave-ish reviews are well deserved, as this work promises to become a standard. The one thing Holmes tends to gloss over is Coleridge's philosophical background, but this background is well covered elswhere, and Holmes hints that he may do more in Volume 2. Definitely buy this title over Stephen Weissman's His Brother's Keeper: A Psychobiography of Samuel Taylor Coleridge ( LJ 1/90).

Review
"Poet, journalist, letter-writer, critic, autobiographer, lecturer, folklorist, philosopher: when a man's genius is so amorphous and protean, how can any one biographer hope to encompass it? Yet, miraculously, in this first of two volumes, Richard Holmes has succeeded in doing so. . . . His masterly book leaves one feeling that, if there were a single literary giant of the past, other than Shakespeare, whom one was permitted to meet, then Coleridge would be the choice."
--Francis King, Evening Standard (London)

"The best literary biography since Ellmann's Oscar Wilde."
--John Mortimer, Sunday Times (London)

"Dazzling. . . . Here is Coleridge, attractive and repellant, with all his seductive contradictions: the young man with his mountainous aspirations, his dreaminess . . . yammering poetry, pounding the turnpikes, dominating drawing-rooms; the foaming genius, messy with metaphysical secretions and uncontrollable speculations. Holmes has not merely reinterpreted Coleridge, he has re-created him, and his biography has the aura of fiction, the shimmer of an authentic portrait. [This is] a biography like few I have ever read."
--James Wood, The Guardian (London)

A wonderful biography - long-awaited sequel
By A Customer
If you think Coleridge was finished by 1804, think again. True, all his great poems had been written but an astonishing life of triumph and tragi-comedy lay ahead. "Coleridge, Darker Reflections" is the long-awaited second half of this award-winning biography of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It covers the period 1804-1834 - a time when, according to popular belief, Coleridge's fertile imagination had dried up and he faced a slippery slide to an opium-induced decline. But not according to the author Richard Holmes, described as "Our best post-war biographer". He is a superb story teller and unlike so many biographers before him, deeply in touch with his subject. His first volume, "Coleridge Early Visions" introduced the poet to a new generation of admirers (including myself who was fired into writing a play for children about the poet's early magical years). This wonderful book will surely establish STC as a troubled but gigantic genius of the 19th century. Holme's own genius is to show us Coleridge the man. "Always on the knife edge between tragedy and comedy" said Holmes at the London book launch this week (21st October 1998) Holmes has worked assiduously through STC's vast notebooks. Like his namesake, Sherlock, the author clearly enjoys the detection element of biography. His is a personal search for the man, his millieu and his place. Holmes retraces STC's footsteps around England - echoing the desperate perambulations of the wandering poet. Holmes tells this astonishing story at a cracking pace - he has the thriller-writer's gift for making you turn the page. We follow STC through his Malta years - a wonderful evocation of Coleridge's chaotic life. The years of tragic opium decline in London are brought to life (I challenge you not to cry) - and yet there are so many triumphs - the marvellous late poems that Holmes has championed in an earlier collection, the seminal lectures on Shakespeare, Coleridge the thinker and radical, Coleridge the father (not a very good one), the years of relative happiness in Highgate where we find Coleridge the guru. Above all is Coleridge the man. Holmes as only the greatest biographers can, brings his subject completely to life and shows us why Coleridge was such a tour de force in the Romantic movement and why Byron called Wordsworth "a fixed star" but Coleridge "a meteor". There is so much to love in this book - it is hard to know what to recommend. If you have never read a biography before, make this your first. If you think you are familiar with the life of STC, this book, so full of new discoveries and insights, will make you reassess the poet. Holmes is clearly enamoured of his subject. It is a book that will make you laugh out loud in places. You will see exactly why Charles Lamb said of his great friend "He is an archangel, damaged."

Excellent, but
By James Hercules Sutton
This treatment of Coleridge's early life is excellent in scope & detail; in fact, it won a prize. But its strength-- objectivity-- is its weakness. Holmes expresses no imaginitive sympathy for his subject. He writes about Romanticism with the detatchment of an entymologist examining a butterfly. And while he treats Coleridge's pathology in an overtly psychological manner, he fails to identify the pathologies he describes -- like a doctor who collects symptoms without making a diagnosis.

The result is an outstanding example of conventional literary biography, but one that is insensitive to growth, imagination, and mind in the act of making the mind -- or why Coleridge was passionate about them. Those interested in these must seek elsewhere, but this volume remains a good place to learn the facts of Coleridge's life, despite its dry prose.

An Admirable Biography
By John R. Lindermuth
Mention Coleridge and you might get the response, "Did he write the Ancient Mariner?," or, "Wasn't he an opium addict?"

Samuel Taylor Coleridge did write The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and he was an opium addict. But, as Richard Holmes makes abundantly clear, there was much more to the man.

He was an extraordinary man, perhaps the most visionary of the English romantic poets. If that were not enough to warrant attention, he was also a political activist, a journalist and translator, a Unitarian preacher, lecturer, philosopher and energetic walker. My own interest in Coleridge was rekindled when I discovered he was among the founders of Pantisocracy, the movement that brought the Unitarian rationalist and scientist Dr. Joseph Priestley to my home area.

This volume, which takes Coleridge up to the age of 31, covers in depth these aspects of his career as well as giving analyses of some of his better known poetry. Holmes does not gloss over the man's failings. He discusses his addiction, the charges of plagiarism, mystic humbug and less than admirable treatment of his wife.

Anyone interested in the man and the period will find this book worth the read.

Readers, booksellers, and critics alike are embracing Queen Sugar and cheering for its heroine, Charley Bordelon, an African American woman and single mother struggling to build a new life amid the complexities of the contemporary South.

When Charley unexpectedly inherits eight hundred acres of sugarcane land, she and her eleven-year-old daughter say goodbye to smoggy Los Angeles and head to Louisiana. From Booklist
Already a widow raising an 11-year-old daughter, Charley Bordelon is further disoriented by the death of her adoring father. He has left her an 800-acre sugarcane field in their native Louisiana, attaching clear restrictions that she must revive the farm or give it to charity, with no option to sell the farm or share it with her estranged half brother, Ralph Angel. So Charley and her reluctant daughter, Micah, relocate from L.A. to rural Louisiana, welcomed into the bosom of the family by her grandmother, Miss Honey. But they walk into old family tensions when Ralph Angel and his 6-year-old son, Blue, come for an extended stay. Charley arrives just in time for the growing season, facing dilapidated fields desperately in need of care. As a citified black woman with no experience in farming, can she make a go of it as a sugarcane farmer in an area that clings to privileges afforded to whites, males, and the wealthy? In alternating chapters, Baszile shows the separate paths that lead Charley and Ralph Angel back home in this exploration of family ties and disconnections. --Vanessa Bush

Review
“In Queen Sugar, two bulwarks of American literature—Southern fiction and the transformational journey—are given a fresh take by talented first time novelist Natalie Baszile . . . [the novel] is a sensory experience, a tableau vivant that Baszile skillfully paints in a palette simultaneously subtle and bold. Queen Sugar is a bright and enticing reminder that, sometimes, you can go home.”
—O Magazine

“A nuanced evocation of contemporary black life.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Reading this book is inhabiting, briefly, the backbreaking and brutal yet rewarding life that is sugarcane farming.... Queen Sugar is an impressive debut from a talented writer and a fascinating look into the world of the contemporary South.”—Washington Independent Review of Books

“Baszile infuses her novel with flickers of poetic detail and spot-on observations... Queen Sugar gets props for its charming characters and enthralling, fully realized setting.”—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"In her heartfelt and beautiful debut novel, Natalie Baszile tells a tale of the South that is as deeply rooted in time and place as it is universal. How do we make sense of family? Loss? The legacies passed down to us? These are the questions that Charley, a young widowed mother, grapples with, as she tries to save the sugarcane plantation that is her inheritance and which, unbeknownst to her, holds the answers to both her past and her future."
—Ruth Ozeki, author of A Tale for the Time Being

"Natalie Baszile debuts with an irresistible tale of family, community, personal obligation, and personal reinvention. The world is full of things that keep you down and things that lift you up—Queen Sugar is about both and in approximately equal measure.  Smart and heart-felt and highly recommended."
—Karen Joy Fowler, New York Times bestselling author of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves

"Queen Sugar is a gorgeous, moving story about what grounds us as brothers and sisters, as mothers and daughters, and all the ways we fight to save each other. Natalie Baszile’s characters put brave roots into inhospitable ground, looking for a place, a person, a community to call home. I alternately laughed and wept as they failed each other, forgave each other, lost each other, found themselves. It’s a wise, strong book, and I loved it. You will, too."
—Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of Someone Else's Love Story

"After turning the last page of Queen Sugar, I already miss the gutsy, contemporary African American woman who ditches California and migrates to Louisiana to run her inherited cane farm. Natalie Baszile is a fresh, new voice that resists all Southern stereotypes, and delivers an authentic knock-out read."
—Lalita Tademy, New York Times bestselling author of Cane River and Red River

“Raw with hardship and tender with hope, Queen Sugar digs deep to the core of a courageous young widow’s life as she struggles to keep her farm in Louisiana’s sugarcane country. Natalie Baszile writes with a bold and steady hand.”
—Beth Hoffman, New York Times bestselling author of Looking for Me and Saving CeeCee Honeycutt

"Queen Sugar is a page-turning, heart-breaking novel of the new south, where the past is never truly past, but the future is a hot, bright promise. This is a story of family and the healing power of our connections—to each other, and to the rich land beneath our feet."
—Tayari Jones, author of Silver Sparrow

“Natalie Baszile’s Queen Sugar is a sweeping, beautifully wrought, and uniquely American story that brings to vibrant life the little known world of Louisiana’s sugarcane country. I fell in love with Charley Bordelon—her huge heart, her kindness, her courage, and her resilience. A lyrical and page-turning meditation on second chances, reinvention, family, and race, Queen Sugar casts quite a spell.”
—Melanie Gideon, author of The Slippery Year and Wife 22

"Queen Sugar is an accomplished, confident narrative that announces the arrival of a writer to watch."
—Krys Lee, author of Drifting House

“Gorgeous . . . an exquisitely written book about the joys and sorrows of family, love, endurance, and hard work.”
—Peter Orner, author of Last Car Over the Sagamore Bridge

“Baszile, whose father arrived in California from Louisiana in 1954, knows the region well, and "Queen Sugar" yields a moving tale of contemporary Southern life.” —San Jose Mercury News

“The confidence and intimacy of Queen Sugar come from its parallels with the author’s life story.... Details gleaned through those experiences help create a story where readers can feel the aching muscles and sweat-drenched shirts... With such a captivating first novel, Baszile has established herself as a bright new author worth keeping an eye on.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Baszile’s writing style flows easily, and there are beautiful passages around every corner.... a welcome addition to the fellowship of American authors”—The Missourian

“Baszile is an eloquent and descriptive writer. Her prose on the Southern landscape and sugarcane farms are worth reading alone.... This is a unique and heartbreaking tale of family members who come from entirely different worlds and reunite to provide for one another. It artfully captures the timelessness of the struggle to survive, the virtues of perseverance, and the undying bonds of blood.” —Alexandra Chang, Bust Magazine

“Baszile has a great story to tell, and she does it with equal parts charm, perception, and suspense.”—Country Roads Magazine

Inheriting a Sugarcane Plantation Brings Troubles and Romance
By Nancy Famolari
When her father dies, Charley Bordelon is surprised to inherit an 800 acre sugarcane plantation in Louisiana. She knows nothing about raising sugarcane. Her father wasn't a farmer either, but he mortgaged everything he had to buy these 800 acres.

Charley is a widow with a preteen daughter. She badly needs a fresh start and the only option is the sugarcane plantation. She settles in with her delightful grandmother, Miss Honey, and her other relatives. The one blot on the horizon is her half-brother. He has been in trouble most of his life; now he's back, and he resents that Charley got the whole inheritance.

Learning the sugarcane business isn't easy, particularly since no one wants to help her. Charley struggles against the odds and the desire to give up, but eventually finds help and a surprising romance.

The unusual characters and the lovely setting make this book a delight to read. I enjoyed the descriptions of farm life, but they could be tedious to someone with no background in farming. I also found the plot rather slow even when Charley finds romance. She does a great deal of talking to herself about her troubles and it becomes repetitious. However, the setting and characters make it worth the read.

I reviewed this book for Net Galley.

Best Read for me in a long time!
By Chris Read
OK, so this is a first for me. I have never written a review before. I just finished the book and absolutely loved it! The story, the characters, the themes, the details and the descriptive imagery are all wonderful. I was thoroughly entertained and really did not want to put the book down. I read a lot and this book is by far my favorite in quite awhile. I recommending it to all my friends. I really can see the story as a movie as well. I have even fantasized about the actors and actresses who might be great in the character roles. I look forward to more stories from Natalie Baszile!

I read this atmospheric novel of the Louisiana sugar cane farmers life in one sitting. It was the perfect book to curl up with on a rainy day. I could not put it down. Wish it was another 300 pages!

I would recommend it to anyone interested in country music and/or this ...
By Robert Best
I thought the book was written clearly without starry eyed embelishment. The story line starts with childhood and early school experiences which the author used to explain some of the reasons T. S. is driven. Without the cooperative parents and that drive we probably would never have heard of Taylor Swift. The book increased my esteem for the achievements of this young lady. I would recommend it to anyone interested in country music and/or this musician.

Great Read!
By Karen Gros
I really enjoyed reading this sampler of the Taylor Swift "The Whole Story" book. I also would like to state that I was very pleased with the length of the sampler. It was much longer than I expected and contained multiple chapters of the book. I found this sampler to be very enjoyable as it provided an inside look to Taylor's life growing up and leading up to her music career. I think most take it for granted that she had it made growing up and this book puts all those assumptions to rest. Yes, her parents were well off, but it didn't change the fact that she had to make her own way in the music business and also deal with peer pressure.

Great read and I look forward to completing the book soon!

Marlon Brando: A Memoir, by Nancy K. Peardon

“…[Nancy’s] proven herself to be a lasting and loyal friend and someone that’s worthy of being a personal confidant…I love her children, I hate her husband, for reasons I won’t bother with now, mostly because he’s there and I’m not. I would trust her with my money and my shorts” —Marlon Brando

A young woman meets Marlon Brando while working as an assistant in her father’s Beverly Hills dental office. It’s 1976. Brando’s a screen legend. The twenty year old is enraptured by the fifty-two year old star of such classic American films as A Streetcar Named Desire, Viva Zapata!, The Wild One, On the Waterfront, The Godfather, and Last Tango in Paris. Brando’s as dazzled by her—“I think I’m falling in love,” he sighs, taking her hand in his to kiss—and on that day, he and Nancy Peardon embark on an intimate and tempestuous relationship that was to last another twenty-eight years until the actor’s death in 2004.

Serving as Brando’s on-again, off-again executive assistant, Peardon becomes his steadfast confidante, experiencing a side of the famously private actor few know about or could ever discern from his memorable roles, from Stanley Kowalski to Vito Corleone. He was mischievous, principled, idiosyncratic, volatile, enigmatic, fierce in his views on everything from the film industry to international affairs, but ultimately as vulnerable as a child. Marlon Brando: A Memoir explores Marlon Brando the man, behind Marlon Brando the myth, from the vantage point of someone who knew him like no other.

"...this memoir isn't intended as another scathing account of the Hollywood icon. Instead, it's a loving—and gushing—tribute to a friend, warts and all...a vivid, easy read... A new, different twist on familiar Brando stories." —Kirkus Reviews

Review
"A fascinating must-read for Brando fans." --Publishers Weekly

"Their interactions are funny, shocking, and sad (especially as the actor's health deteriorated), and, more importantly, never gossipy or frivolous...Beyond simply humanizing Brando or elaborating upon his legacy, this memoir shows how complicated truly great friendships can be, and how rare genuine people are to come by. It is a warm, engaging book that begs to be shared." -- Film Comment|Film Society of Lincoln Center

"...this memoir isn't intended as another scathing account of the Hollywood icon. Instead, it's a loving--and gushing--tribute to a friend, warts and all...a vivid, easy read...A new, different twist on familiar Brando stories." --Kirkus Reviews

Another side of Brando
By Ralfonso
The Author was the daughter of Brando's dentist. She was 20 years old when they
met and he was 52.Their relationship lasted close to 30 years but according to her
they never had sex because she said Brando didn't want to find another dentist.Brando
was compulsive about his habits, whether it was food, sex,or when he was slighted
by his friends. He called her at work,at her home (even though she was married)and
over the years was employed and fired by him twice.
She comes across as a weak individual lacking confidence in her early years. Her
husband was an alcoholic and Brando warned her against marring him but she did
not heed his advice. Some of the conversations are interesting but also perverse,
Brando coming across as a serial manipulator and a misogynist. She comes across
as a victim and he in his words a "monster".
This book more or less reinforces information previously written about him but it is
still fascinating why we should still care about him after his death.

Marlon Brando: A Memoir
By Daniel F. Rousseau
Hemingway, in his preface to THE SNOWS OF KILAMANJARO, says that on the peak of the 19,710-foot Mount Kilamanjaro was found the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. He adds, "No one has ever explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude."
Nancy Peardon's MARLON BRANDO: A MEMOIR, offers to us the highly intelligent and sensitive Brando who, like Hemingway's leopard, sought his answers at the highest of altitudes - on the altar of pure friendship. And for nearly thirty years, he tested his friendship with Ms. Peardon, sometimes turning away, but always returning.
Trust is the core of any relationship, and Nancy Peardon has not violated that trust. In MARLON BRANDO: A MEMOIR, she has offered to us the man whose sensitive nature not only made him a great actor, but a true friend to those who proved themselves worthy.

a different look at brando
By david in FL
i've read most of the brando books and this is a welcome fresh perspective. it is not a standard bio, but a memoir and love story. she was the daughter of brando's dentist. they met when she was 20 and knew each other until his death 28 years later.
"he allowed me to love the man who lived sequestered behind the unfathomable persona of marlon brando," she writes, "and he made me feel unconditionally loved in return."
here's what he told her once: "nancy, you must understand, there are only five people in this world that i trust. and, as it turns out, you're one of those five people."
but their relationship wasn't always easy. he once locked her in the trunk of his car, just for sport. that anecdote, and others i'd read elsewhere about his mistreatment of people, brings to mind blanche dubois' words about deliberate cruelty -- "it is the one unforgivable thing." but peardon forgave and/or gave back during their quarrels.
one thing that distinguishes this book is its up close and personal nature. another is the graceful writing. other reviewers have mentioned her candor. indeed, you appreciate her honesty. she doesn't seem to have left much out. you'll come to like her as you read this book. as for brando, exasperating, charming and dozens of other adjectives. i liked this vignette about his dog:
"i witnessed marlon and tim sharing many secrets during tim's lifetime. marlon would whisper in tim's ear, and i'd watch tim raise one eyebrow, as he'd hold his giant mastiff head very still and listen. only his eyebrow would indicate the import of some of their secrets."
peardon and brando's friendship started with a 4 1/2 hour phone call that went until 3 a.m., after which he tried to persuade her to go to the beach to watch the sun rise. the book ends with his memorial service, sensitively described.

The Egyptian Cross Mystery, by Ellery Queen

The Queens are intrigued when a grisly murder mars a small town’s Christmas

It’s Christmas in Chicago, and Inspector Richard Queen is enjoying a busman’s holiday at a conference on gangland violence—but his son, amateur sleuth Ellery, isbored silly. Until, that is, Ellery reads of an unusual killing in rural Arroyo, West Virginia: A schoolmaster has been found beheaded and crucified. Ellery hustles his father into his roadster and heads east, since there is nothing he’d like better for Christmas than a juicy, gruesome puzzle. When the Queens arrive in Arroyo, they learn that the victim was an eccentric atheist, but not the sort to make enemies. What initially looks to be the work of a sadistic cult turns out to be something far more sinister. In the months ahead, more victims will turn up all over the world—all killed in the same horrifying manner. It will take several bodies before Queen divines the clue that unlocks the mystery of the Christmas crucifixion.

Review
“A new Ellery Queen book has always been something to look forward to for many years now.” —Agatha Christie “Ellery Queen is the American detective story.” —Anthony Boucher, author of Nine Times Nine

About the Author
Ellery Queen was a pen name created and shared by two cousins, Frederic Dannay (1905–1982) and Manfred B. Lee (1905–1971), as well as the name of their most famous detective. Born in Brooklyn, they spent forty-two years writing, editing, and anthologizing under the name, gaining a reputation as the foremost American authors of the Golden Age “fair play” mystery. Although eventually famous on television and radio, Queen’s first appearance came in 1928, when the cousins won a mystery-writing contest with the book that was later published as The Roman Hat Mystery. Their character was an amateur detective who uses his spare time to assist his police inspector uncle in solving baffling crimes. Besides writing the Queen novels, Dannay and Lee cofounded Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, one of the most influential crime publications of all time. Although Dannay outlived his cousin by nine years, he retired Queen upon Lee’s death.

Vintage Ellery Queen - Good Plot and Eccentric Characters
By Michael Wischmeyer
I quite enjoyed The Egyptian Cross Mystery. I developed several plausible solutions, but none which I could clearly prove through a sequence of logical deductions. I had possibilities, I had partial solutions, and I had pieces of evidence, but I was unable to establish an irrefutable chain of logic. And as fans of Ellery Queen know, deduction requires the application of impeccable logic. For the record: none of my possibilities, nor partial solutions, were correct. I was surprised by the solution.
The Egyptian Cross Mystery offers a fast-paced unpredictable plot, a plethora of eccentric characters, and brilliant deductions by Ellery himself. I give it five stars.
The Egyptian Cross Mystery is a good introduction to Ellery Queen. In this fifth novel the young Ellery Queen can still be insufferable on occasion, although the presence of his college professor, Dr. Yardley, checks his impulse to exhibit his erudition. Ellery remains baffled by the bizarre murders as does the reader. A final clue hidden among detail suddenly provides Ellery, and the particularly observant reader (not me, however), the key to the mystery. Stay alert for the final clue, despite deliberate distractions and misdirection.
Ellery Queen's investigations take him on long, tiring road trips in his beloved Duesenberg. Each destination is a gruesome murder site. A decapitated victim is found lashed to a post. A capital letter T is scrawled in blood nearby. Using more guesswork than logic, Ellery senses some obscure connection to ancient Egyptian myth.
I always enjoy the early Ellery Queen stories, those mysteries dating from 1929 through 1939. My other early favorites, for comparison purposes, include The Greek Coffin Mystery, The Siamese Twin Mystery, The Spanish Cape Mystery, and two Drury Lane mysteries, The Tragedy of X and The Tragedy of Y.

The Case of the Human T's
By Kevin Killian
I would have given this a higher rank but, as God is my witness, I just can't stand the way Ellery talks sometimes. And that Professor Yardley, his college mentor, is just as bad. In fact if Yardley is responsible for Ellery's affacted mannerisms, then he should be made a public example of. It's like James Stewart in ROPE and his evil effect on the two innocent boys John Dall and Farley Granger whom he turned into killers with his Nietzschean philosophy. Here it's Yardley's ridiculous circumlocutions and archaic oaths and painful bon mots.

The story puzzled me and i was genuinely surprised by how it came out, but after my glow of surprise I had second thoughts about the whole enterprise.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

It seems almost criminal that we had to waste so much time keeping up with the nudist colony and the convoluted love lives of the Brads amd the Lincolns and those British people. Chapter after chapter of just plain garbage, and none of it germane to the story or the plotting--just plain old padding. Padding's too good a word for it.

Also, Ellery and Yardley sure make a lot of deductions based on the "fact" that no man would put another man's pipe in his mouth if he could possibly help it. Where'd all this homosexual panic come from?

SPOILERS OVER.

I don't know what's more risible, but the hillbilly dialect is an insult to realism. But it's like reading Hemingway compared to the way the sailors talk. "What time did that happen, Cap'n Swift?" "Seven bells." "Oh, I see, eleven-thirty."

Nevertheless, I liked the bloody and grim Montenegro story, maybe because I'm a guy--seems like all the reviewers are male--a chromosomal thing? I wonder how Qyueen was actually able to get away with so much blood and guts--it's like TALES FROM THE CRYPT squared. More vomiting than you'd see on choppy waters on a liferaft. It's just swimming with fluids.

Great mystery
By DonC
This is one of Queen's best mysteries. I have read most of the early ones that had the name of a country it, such as The Roman Hat mystery or The Dutch Shoe Mystery. The Greek Coffin Mystery was another great one. Most of his early books I enjoyed.

The only one I would NOT recommend is "On the Eighth Day".
