Sakina is an embroidery artist growing up in the shanty town of Indian Nairobi, a railroad settlement in British East Africa in the early 1900s. At home there are many storytellers like her stepmother, grandfather and uncle whose stories blend into histories of India and East Africa that flare her child’s imagination. In her tormented married life, while becoming a woman, Sakina finds comfort in the art of the beadwork of the Maasai. Bead Bai is one woman’s story inspired by lives of Asian African women who sorted out, arranged and generally looked after huge quantities of ethnic beads in urban and isolated rural parts of the British East African Empire. The availability of wide varieties of beads and colours from the entrepreneurial Indian bead merchant reaching out to the most distant communities, heightened diverse vernacular expressions of body décor. Often it was the Bead Bai – the merchant’s wife, mother and daughter, who handled beads that today comprise singularly the most significant material for maintenance of this feminine and indigenous art heritage of East Africa. This is a historical novel drawn from domestic and community lives evolving around women’s art. Both are of considerable social and artistic values among two culturally unalike people living side by side as separate yet inter-reliant societies on the savannah. One object is the bandhani shawl of the Satpanth Ismailis, a trading settler Asian African community adhering austerely to a distinct faith tradition rooted in Sufism and Vedic beliefs that imbibed Sakina’s spiritual life. The other is the emankeeki, a beaded neck to chest ornament of the Maasai, a pastoralist African people to whom the savannah is the ancestral home and source of their art, spirituality and well-being that Sakina came to value as a part her own life. Note: From the 1970s following the expulsion of Asians from Uganda, Satpanth Ismailis from East Africa began coming to the West, particularly to Canada, in large numbers. Many Bead Bais came with their families to the new country. Some lived through their senior years with their sons and daughters, and some died in nursing homes. Today their descendents live across the provinces of Canada and the greater Asian African diaspora.

This book is an extraordinarily intelligent, sensitive, and perceptive study of the details of Mozart's writing that makes his music so wonderful. It will, however, be, perhaps, more of value to readers who can read music scores than to those who cannot, since there are many long passages from various Mozart compositions throughout the book.

Thoughtful and Insightful

A good half of this books consists of musical scores, and since I'm not trained in music and cannot read it, all those pages were lost on me. Burnham's text, however, is very illuminating, and by actually playing recordings of the pieces cited, it's possible to follow his essays on what makes Mozart's music so very special. If you are an enthusiastic layman like me, don't be afraid to tackle this short book -- even shorter if you skip the scores. Come armed with a good memory or some compact discs, and enjoy the ride.

What a book!

When I was in the states a few months ago I was surprised to know my sister actually wrote a book. So I started to read it immediately! I haven't been able to get my own copy as yet but I can tell you this is great stuff! I only read the first chapter before I had to come back home. I am anxious to read the rest of this marvelous book!

This needs a sequel

Now that I have read the entire book I can give a complete review. I am happy to report that the entire book is like the one chapter I read before. Can't put it down!! It was a slow day at work so in the afternoon I picked the book up, well time to leave came. I called Yonette just to tell her what chapter I was on. She said it was OK I could finish it next week it was fine with her. On ending the call I looked at the book. What was going to happen to Sasha? Why on earth did Lilly do that? What about Jason? I love Mummy Dee. I had to know what happened. I didn't leave work. I picked up the book and finished it. Forget about home, dinner I had to know.
As you can tell I know Yonette, and I promise you all I will lobby for the sequel. I know you all want it.

I only read non fiction but I read some of this as a favor and I really could not stop I just had to know what happens next. I bet you will be the same. Yonette has a wonderful insight into the human condition and human behavior. Buy it!!!!

The condition of the American health care system today resembles the condition of a severely injured person in a hospital emergency operating room awaiting major surgery. And just as you will not see what happens in that operating room to that badly damaged patient on that operating table, neither will you see the largely hidden from view specific developments that will constitute the hospital by hospital reconstruction of American health care and of medical education and training by for-profit and non-profit organizations. With the exception of this book, that is.

"Merger Games" provides just such a "fly on the wall" view of how major health care reorganizations occur. I spent most of my career financing major corporate reorganizations and I can attest to the fact that Judith Swazey speaks with enormous "inside" knowledge and authority. She obviously knows very well whereof she speaks. I have no idea how she obtained such incredible access, but she clearly did. That is one of the things that makes this timely book so genuine and thus so rare.

This powerful book delivers lessons that extend beyond the particular story it tells and beyond academic health care organizations. It vividly documents fundamental patterns inherent in practically all corporate reorganizations and mergers, and dissects why they succeed or fail. Because of these highly important and ever so timely lessons, the information in this book should not be limited to being just a book. It needs to reach the widest possible audience and to that end it should be made into a movie. It has all the ingredients of a terrific box office success. And at the same time it should be made into a Harvard Business School case study because these lessons are today so vital to every single one of us and they need to be understood by tomorrow's organizational leaders.

Well-written and sobering for academic MDs

I was an academic physician in another Philadelphia institution at the time "Merger Games" was happening. Merger Games helps put together what happened to MCP and Hahnemann faculty and students. It is written objectively, but putting myself in the place of the faculty and students, it must have been traumatic and discouraging and begs for a follow-up study. The practice and teaching of medicine is about caring for your fellow human being. What happened, as well described in Merger Games, had more to do with ego and money than traditional physician based values. Academic physicians should definitely put this on their reading list and anyone who thinks about leading an organization could profit from the real lessons described. Thank you, Dr. Swazey.
