Before making any attempt to study the letters and rules themselves, the student must be familiar with the phonetic system and the technical terms defined in the glossary. The main chapters are presented in the following order: - phonetic transcription; - vocalic letters; - consonant letters, syllables; - basic tone rules; - special letter-combinations; - irregular tones; - how to spell words; - how to use a dictionary... Finally bought it! Well worth it!!!

Learning Thai and collecting books on the Thai language are my main hobbies & after buying and using dozens of Thai language books (all helpful to some extent - and more than a few of them referencing this book), I finally found this book at a reasonable price (there was no way I was paying the $200+ some sellers on Amazon were asking). I ended up paying around $20 for this one and let me tell you, I can see why many books reference it. Most Thai language books cover very basic grammar, but leave some very important aspects of grammar out (general rules for determining tones, rules for correctly pronouncing consonant clusters, rules for correctly determining the tone of consonant clusters, etc). As an assistant teacher at the local temple, I help to teach Thai to new adult students and these types of questions would come up when students started to get to the beginner-to-intermediate level & I would have to ask the head teacher (Thai native) for answers. Well, none of the Thai natives could really explain the rules determining how they spoke, so we were always stuck at a "we don't know why, but don't worry about it" impasse. Well, this book gives you the what, how, and why behind the grammar and it turns out to be quite integral to correctly reading/speaking Thai. Highly recommended for those students who plan to go further than the mere "tourist Thai" found in your average Thai language book. Well worth $20 - $30 if you can find it for sale! Wish it wasn't out of print!
