The story, originally published in German, is long and ruminative, but the translation stays true to Johanna’s viewpoint as she fights with her dad, has sex with her boyfriend, and realizes that, while she must do something about the past, she can never put things right. About the Author
Mirijam Pressler is a renowned author of children's and young adult literature in Germany. Her novel When Happiness Comes, You Have to Offer It a Chair was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize. Ms. Pressler also received the German Book Award 2004 for her life's literary work. She lives near Munich.

Terrific Insights, Nicely Written

Young adult literature dealing with serious historical themes can be hard to find, but this book does an excellent job. The style caught me immediately as new and different, and I loved the characters. This book would be a great addition to any social studies curriculum, I'm guessing, as it fills out personal aspects of history that sometimes get lost.

Great historical content, detailed sexual encounters

This story has great historical content and teaches a lot about the events and actions against the Jewish community during Hitler's reign. It was purchased so one of my teachers could teach through it. HOWEVER, there are several detailed sex scenes and references that do not make it appropriate for a school library.
