Excellent thorough analysis of 2D and 3D rigid body dynamics

This book is a great help for someone getting started in particle and rigid body dynamics. The explanations and notation is very clear. It progresses from simple particle-to-plane problems to collisions between two articulated chains. After you read this book, look at David Baraff's article in SIGGRAPH-96 (available at his web page) and also read "Dynamics of Multibody Systems, 2nd ed" by Ahmed Shabana.

It's like a favorite teacher

I am an independent corporate trainer who teaches people to write better at work. When my students ask me for good books to learn even more, this is the first book I mention. I tell them, "If you are a good writer and you want to be a very good writer, get this book."
I also tell them several other things about the book. First, it is not a book of lists like the excellent resource, The Elements of Style. Instead, it's a challenging textbook that is informative and compelling from beginning to end. Second, it teaches a novel way to keep readers interested in what you are writing. Basically it's narrative, or story telling, within each sentence. Third, it provides guidance on advanced topics such as emphasis, elegance, and ethics. Topics like these might seem esoteric or irrelevant, but the author makes them easy to understand and shows why they are useful, and he does it in a way that is fun to read.
This book is one of those few textbooks that you will remember the same way you remember that favorite teacher. Like that teacher, it brought you to a new level of knowledge, and it did it with humor and style.
I rated this book 5 stars because I think it is superior in all categories for a textbook: useful content, insightful author, clear exposition, skillful publishing, and reasonable price.

Best of the Best

It is difficult to know where to begin. I am writing a brief review of this book to counter the negative reviews I read. I was stunned: I expected to read rave reviews of Professor Williams' book. Without wanting to offend anyone, they are for the most part so far off the mark I would think they were talking about another book.

One author mentioned Strunk and White's book as the ideal. As much as I loved this book when I was young, it seems slightly old-fashioned, even quaint now, and encourages an attention to rules that seems superficial. On the other hand, Williams' book takes advantage of the more systematic, deep approach to language, rhetoric and communication that was developed by the best linguists of the 20th century. There is a good reason that this book has had so many editions for such a long period of time (now in the 8th edition). It is because it is based on an insight that touches a deep truth about communicating in writing: that subjects and verbs, or characters and their actions as Williams helpfully calls them at times, form the basic elements of the English sentence. It is Williams' ability to draw out the implications of this simple truth that gives his book its genius. Emerson once said that rhythm is the deep structure of the universe (he said it better but I can't remember his words); I feel that Emerson would smile in agreement at Williams thesis: that it is an understanding of the significance of the basic character/action relationship between the subject and verb that gives a sentence its strength and, on a "higher" level, the same systole/diastole relationship between theme and discussion that gives a paragraph its strength.

I am by no means doing Professor Williams' book justice, and I would not have written this review if the others had not been so, well, wrong. His writing bad? On the contrary, good writing, as Williams points out in a useful addition to one of the later editions of his book on controlling longer sentences, does not mean Dick and Jane type sentences, and he does not allow himself to fall into Strunk and White's tendency to oversimplify in explaining his ideas. I am now directing an English language program at a major university in Thailand after teaching English at Indiana University for 20 years, and I was recently asked to teach a graduate course on writing. What book did I first reach for in looking for the most substantial, concrete, practical and useful lessons on writing so that my students would not be exposed to the usual platitudes on omitting needless words and relying on your taste to be your guide? Professor Williams' book of course. It is the best of the best and will reward you endlessly as you apply his basic insights in your own writing.

Great resource for writers and editors

I wish I had this book five years ago when I was starting out as a copy editor at my college newspaper. In this abridged version of the text, Williams provides guidelines and techniques as to how to revise problematic sentences. He dissects the problems in a clear fashion and leads the reader through the process of editing through the problems. It takes only a few hours to read, but sessions of careful re-reading will prove rewarding for your writing and editing skills.

Although the focus is on nonfiction writing, insofar as I can tell, the advice and methods Williams presents can be applied beyond nonfiction. Williams does use a lot of grammar terminology and does diagram some sentences, almost a lost skill nowadays, but he explains himself clearly, concisely, and with examples.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who seeks to improve their writing and editing skills, especially at the college level. Added bonus: this is more inexpensive compared to the unabridged version of the book.

The 30th century in 1965

In volume four of the Legion Archives you can see certain hints of the DC Comics to come. Most of the material here is rooted in DC's Silver Age traditions: single issue stories, minimal characterization, a modest art style. And yet there are definite indications that the series was gradually changing. One character's status quo is dramatically altered. Two-part stories start to become more common. Subplots from previous issues crop up. A recurring villain returns once again, and two more are introduced. The result is a mixture of the established DC style with the more innovative elements that were coming into use in superhero stories around this time. And even the more conventional material is enjoyable. Several of the stories have a very space opera-ish feel to them, no surprise considering they were written by pulp sci-fi author Edmond Hamilton. There is also humor, as seen in the Legion's encounter with their Bizarro duplicates, and in the debut of the extremely oddball Insect Queen. Artwise, John Forte and Jim Mooney's pencils may lack a certain sophistication, but they definitely possess strong storytelling. Forte also adds a certain stylish flair to his depictions of both strange alien beasts and beautiful women. All in all, the material here is interesting and entertaining. It's not deep or terribly innovative, but it is a lot of fun.

Collection of Legion Comics Showing the End of an Era and Some Transitions

The fourth volume of the Legion Archives series contains comics from 1965. As K.C. Carlson, who edited some of the reboot Legion's comics in the 1990s notes in the excellent introduction to this volume, while there are some important Legion developments--such as the flight rings--this book does not contain the most memorable of stories.

Fans of the Legion will enjoy this work. While the Legion has a large cast, the various personalities and romantic attachments that shaped the group did not play a prominent role in earlier volumes. In this volume, readers will find one of the team's founders starting to come into his own while two romantic couples are clearly launching their relationships. The Time Trapper makes his debut after a long buildup and there are more two part stories included in this volume than in previous ones. There are some traces that Marvel Comics, DC's great rival, was starting to influence the Legion but the full changes spearheaded by Jim Shooter were still waiting in the future.

But if there are some transitions, in many ways these comics serve as an endcap to the first phase of the Legion's development. Superboy is still the lead character and the Legion revolves around him--including an odd Lana Lang appearance as Insect Queen. These stories show the influences of mid 20th century science fiction--which makes sense since Edmond Hamilton, a pretty solid writer in the genre, crafted most of these plots.

Fans of the Legion and the Silver Age of comics will enjoy this book. I'm not sure how this book will fare outside those audiences. While this book does not contain the most memorable of comic, it's clear the Legion was starting to come into its own. 1965 marked the end of one era for the Legion and the transitions are fascinating to watch in this enjoyable volume.

Edmond Hamilton era in full swing.

This edition captures the period when Ed Hamilton was providing the lions share of writing and he provided some really fine stories based on his usual penchant for adapting classic novels to his superheroes. One of my favorite stories from that period is "The Moby Dick From Space". Tragedy again befalls poor Lightning Lad. Also we get the introduction of Starfinger who was one of the Legion's most formidable villains up to this point. John Forte's art never matched up to Curt Swan's beautiful cover art. Whereas Forte's weird, stiff, inflexible, manikin like figures suited the Bizarro stories which Forte drew, and which were replaced by the LOS in Adventure Comics; it was much of the time a distraction from the flow of the story. Forte often positioned the character's body facing the reader with it's head turned at a flat 45 degree angle speaking to another character. It was just unsettling. Arms were generally drawn straight down as one perpetually standing at attention. Forte was one of Swan's better inkers but his art was a poor choice for these characters and this book wouldn't take off until Curt Swan became the chief storyline artist. Still and all this collection is worth reading because of the stories. Much of the Legion lore for the next several decades were established here.

Molly Blume, crime columnist and amateur detective, has lost some of her mental crispness in Krich's lukewarm fourth suspense novel (after 2004's Grave Endings). Somewhat reluctantly, she agrees to look into the disappearance of the 18-year-old daughter of a rabbi who was once her teacher. The investigation leads her in myriad directions—to dangerous Internet chat rooms, suicidal teenagers, academic cheats—most of which turn out to be red herrings the size of orcas. Meanwhile, Molly fiddles endlessly with her theories, rehashing the same bits and pieces until readers are begging for some action—which comes all in a rush at the end and has little to do with the information Molly uncovered. Krich's usual solid plotting suffers from overwriting and from credibility issues. After the missing teenager turns up midway through the book, Molly has no reason to continue poking around. But Krich hasn't lost what may be her greatest strength: her ability to invite readers into the world of Orthodox Judaism or to allow us to share vicariously in its rituals and the warmth of its community.

Bailor's 18-year-old daughter, Hadassah, has disappeared, apparently with a man she met in an Internet chat room. Reluctantly, Molly agrees to bypass the authorities. Then Hadassah returns on her own; shortly thereafter, the man believed to have lured her away turns up dead. Could Hadassah have been involved? Writing some chapters from Hadassah's perspective, Krich brings the girl's terror and naivete close, but most of the story revolves around Molly, who doggedly pursues the tangled truth and wrestles with a long-ago hurt that tests her ability to forgive. Molly tracks a troubled teen.

Thirty-year-old Molly Blume is writer whose speciality is true crime stories and she has been happily married to the love of her life, Rabbi Zach Abrams, for eight months. When an eighteen-year-old Orthodox Jewish girl named Hadassah Bailor runs away with a man whom she met in an Internet chat room, Rabbi Chaim Bailor enlists Molly's help in finding his daughter. The rabbi would like Molly to track Hadassah down and convince her to come home. Not only is her father worried about what might befall Hadassah, but he is also concerned about his family's good name if Hadassah's actions become common knowledge. Although Molly would prefer that the Bailors go straight to the police, she reluctantly agrees to do what she can to bring Hadassah back.

"Now You See Me" is a sad story about the many pressures and temptations that lead young people astray, even in the so-called sheltered world of the Orthodox Jews. The book has an intricate plot with many twists, turns, and red herrings, and it highlights such timely issues as self-mutilation ("cutting"), teen suicide, and cheating by both high school faculty and students. Krich's characters are not caricatures, but flawed, three-dimensional people. Hadassah is a very troubled and gullible girl, Rabbi Bailor is a bit too concerned with his reputation, and even Molly reveals herself to be a person who holds grudges. "Now You See Me" is not a "feel good" novel in which everyone lives happily ever after. It is a slice of life about the many evils that threaten our children in America's open society.

One of this year's best mystery novels

It isn't the fact that NOW YOU SEE ME... by Rochelle Krich is her best novel to date that makes it noteworthy, though certainly this would be enough for her fan base, which has been quietly and exponentially growing. What makes this latest installment in Krich's Molly Blume series worthy of comment is that its many strengths render it one of this year's best mystery novels.

It begins with a disappearance that is voluntary but then leads to a death --- which may be accidental, or a murder, or self-defense --- framed against a religious and cultural backdrop that causes an incidental impediment of the investigation. The result is an intriguing, engrossing, and even enchanting tale magnificently and beautifully told.

Blume is an orthodox Jew, a reporter and semi-successful author of true crime books who balances her writing career with her duties as a rabbi's wife. NOW YOU SEE ME... begins with Blume taking notice of an apparent fan who attends three of her book signings consecutively. At first she believes that he's a stalker, but then learns that he needs a favor. Reuben Jastrow informs Blume that his daughter, Hadassah, has run away from home with a man who she met on the Internet. Jastrow is concerned that this incident will ruin not only Hadassah's reputation, but also that of her older sister and their entire family.

Blume agrees. But there are difficulties. Hadassah is 18, and in the eyes of the law is of age to do as she wishes. An even bigger problem, however, is that Blume has not been told the entire truth about Hadassah. The truth indirectly involves an incident in Blume's past, one that makes her hesitant to involve herself in Hadassah's disappearance yet ultimately causes her to interject herself into the matter. There is a built-in time bomb, if you will, that makes the discovery of Hadassah's whereabouts within a few days imperative, one that creates a remarkable tension that by itself makes this book worth reading.

When Hadassah finally reappears, it seems that the matter is settled. Subsequently, however, an apparent suicide victim is tied to Hadassah's disappearance; and when it is discovered that the man is actually a murder victim, Hadassah, her father, her other relatives, and even Blume herself are prime suspects. The ultimate key to the entire mystery is shrouded in the past, in matters almost (but not quite) forgotten by those involved, demonstrating that the errors and omissions of the past generation are often visited upon the present.

There is a subtle but constant interplay between tradition and modernity in NOW YOU SEE ME... Krich does not make judgments here; keeping true to the traditions of Jewish orthodoxy is no doubt difficult, particularly given the temptations inherent in this world. Yet there is a comfort in ritual and belief, and the underlying reasons therefore, that shine through in the Blume novels in general and this one in particular.

Krich also deserves kudos for including an extensive glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish words; while readers can discern the meanings of many terms from context, the glossary at times is a comfort indeed. But it is the story, and the telling, that make NOW YOU SEE ME... a winner. Highly recommended.

brilliant insight into the orthodox Jewish American community

Recently married Molly Blume feels good about her life. Besides her personal life, her book is selling and her column is becoming even more popular. However, she becomes concerned when an apparent fan Reuben Jastrow turns up at three consecutive book signings. She initially thinks he is a stalker but he explains that he wants to hire her as a Jewish private detective to find his missing eighteen years old daughter Hadassah. She reluctantly agrees to help because she learns that Reuben is a highly regarded Orthodox rabbi.

Molly's inquiries lead to unsafe chat rooms and Goth-suicidal teens, but these prove false as the sleuth is no closer to finding Hadassah then when she started. The case seems to be going nowhere as Molly ponders what could have happened and reconsiders several times all the possibilities, but finding no clues that take her closer to the vanished teen.

The story line is more character driven than usual as Rochelle Krich concentrates on Molly's muses leading to a brilliant insight into the orthodox Jewish American community. However, a twist in the middle of NOW YOU SEE ME leads to questions as to why Molly does what she does for the rest of the plot. Though not quite at the caliber of a typical Blume tale (see GRAVE ENDINGS), fans of the series will enjoy the happily married Molly's fourth sleuthing adventure played out against a backdrop of Orthodox Judaism

For all those who have not worked with Delphi for a long time or for those who have been stuck with older versions of Delphi, this book is a nice refresher as well as a way to catch up on new features and capabilities. For people new to Delphi, it is a great overview of what is possible with the more recent versions of this fantastic product.

The format and presentation as a cookbook makes it particularly useful as a reference book, also considering the fact that the concepts and examples are directly related to real world situations. The book can certainly be used as a starting point for various projects. The vast experience of the author is clearly visible behind all this.

Another interesting aspect of the book is the presence of all those links to reference material to go deeper into all the topics that were presented. A great added value.

Overall, a very good book that I highly recommend.

Wide material, something to learn for everyone

Covers an amazingly wide variety of topics, with examples that show a lot more than just the nominal subject. It shows 'modern Delphi' - the 2014 environment and language and capabilities. There's something in here even for experienced Delphi programmers, but if you haven't used Delphi for a long time, read it to get a great overview of the state of the language. If you're new to Delphi and need to learn, this book will cover the entire environment, and you'll be up to speed with a good general knowledge of the development environment quickly.

Some of the post-recipe discussion could have more detail.

A good mix of recipes

Before proceeding with my review, you may want to read this other review by Simon J Stuart which provides a good overview of what you can find in the book. I also received a review copy from the publisher, and I’m glad I requested one!

Overall impression

The book uses a great pattern, where a topic is introduced, code is shown to demonstrate it, explanations and observations about the technique are discussed, and suggestions for additional usage or other resources are provided. This “explore more” section of the book may actually be its most valuable part, because Daniele provides specific links that point to good resources to use for each of the recipes covered.

The code examples are useful and as concise as is reasonable.

The order of the book is logical and does a good job of building on some of the previous recipes in later parts of the book:

◦using dynamic arrays and records for JSON to avoid all the “free” calls for TObjectList (this works very well with SuperObject, for example)

A minor nit

I don’t understand what Daniele means by “bounce” as in: “I see too many business applications that are composed by a bounce of dialog windows.”

Like this title suggests, this was a textbook for one of my courses. It did its job, and was informal. However I kinda wish I rented it rather than trusting my professor when she said that this text would be used later in my career. I guess time will tell, whether I will be using this text as a reference.

Clemence Annie Housman (23 November 1861 6 December 1955) was an author, illustrator and activist in the womens suffrage movement. She was the sister of A. E. Housman and Laurence Housman. She was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. Her novels included The Were-Wolf, Unknown Sea and The Life Of Sir Aglovale De Galis. She was also a leading figure in the Suffragette movement.

A Werewolf Story With a Deeper Message

I stumbled across this short story for free on Kindle, and I am very glad that I downloaded and read it. With its period settling and rich language, this story involved me very deeply. It is the story of two brothers: one tall, muscular and handsome; and the other, not handsome at all, slight of build and blessed with the incredible ability to run swiftly over long distances. Sweyn is the beautiful, well-admired brother, and Christian is more than happy to walk meekly in his shadow. But when a beautiful, young, white-haired stranger arrives, she drives a wedge between the brothers. For Christian soon suspects that she is the werewolf he has been tracking, and Sweyn quickly falls in love with this mysterious female who calls herself White Fell, and believes that Christian's ravings are induced by jealous madness.

This story inspired a mix of emotions of me, from dread, to anxiety, to deep sadness. It was one of those stories where you are thinking, "This can't end well," when you get to a certain point in reading it. Indeed, the ending is hardly upbeat. But for a story that starts out as one of thrilling suspense and horror, it has a very meaningful message. It's a story about the power of love and sacrifice, and it was very well-done. A great free find on Amazon Kindle. Recommended to fans of classic genre fiction with a deeper, even spiritual message.

An amazingly beautifully written story. Set in a scandanavian middle age, It's almost poetry in some places. It is one of the stories that people who don't think of horror as 'serious' fiction should read.

This is a refreshing gem of a novella. It's nice to read a story on werewolves in which the werewolf is almost secondary to the idea behind the story. Sacrifice, redemption, good and evil....it's also nice to read a story written at a time during which writers could create sentences more complex than, subject/predicate! Great little book.

This is a requirement for any collection of werewolf tales.
